Freshman major vs what they ended up with ?

<p>S1 – entered as math major taking grad CS courses, graduated as math major with 7 grad CS courses.</p>

<p>S2 – entered as IR major, but FL requirement is eight semesters. By the time he finishes that, he’s two courses short of a second major in Russian/East European Studies, so is going to pick that up as well.</p>

<p>I entered undeclared then wanted “Community Service and Public Affairs,” but was persuaded to get degree in Sociology and then law degree. Practiced for many years and now run a non-profit in health promotion and education.</p>

<p>H started out in engineering (EE) then switched to accounting. He’s been working with computers his whole 45 years of his profession, beside and supervising engineers.</p>

<p>S started out in engineering & got EE degree.</p>

<p>D started out undeclared & then had to choose among 4 majors including neuroscience, economics, interdisciplinary studies and cinema. Should be getting her degree in cinema any day now. Hoping she’ll get a job in field, but who knows?</p>

<p>Mom went in as elementary ed major & got her degree in that. Taught for two years & then stayed home to raise kids. Later got special ed masters and substitute taught for special ed to help put kids thru college & grad school.</p>

<p>Dad wanted to major in business, which he did & got MBA and JD in 3 years and a summer.</p>

<p>2 sisters wanted to follow mom & did, including masters in special ed. Younger sister has taught elementary ed for nearly 30 years. Older sister tutored at private school–English and math, particularly good with dyslexics.</p>

<p>Older brother wanted business degree and got it, followed by law degree. Has practiced law for 30+ years.</p>

<p>Younger brother wanted to be an MD from early on. He got a degree in some science and then went to medical school & is happily practicing.</p>

<p>Youngest sister was undecided & finally chose to major in speech. She’s working as a clerk for medical insurer.</p>

<p>Youngest brother wanted to major in Travel Industry and Management. After a year working at a hotel, went to law school & has been practicing law now for 20+ years.</p>

<p>My SIL majored in nutrition. She took the MCATs and did well enough that she was accepted to med school & became a dermatologist; has practiced for 30+ years, mostly part-time. Her plan B was either law school or MBA.</p>

<p>One niece majored in English, went to law school and is a labor law investigator.
Other niece majored in history and math; clerking for city.
Other niece majored in history and is now in podiatry school.
Nephew majored in math and biology; starts med school in July.
Other niece will be majoring in Business and Mandarin–is a college JR.</p>

<p>I had already posted for my S, but I see that others are posting for themselves.</p>

<p>Both H and I started out as electrical engineering majors, and ended up as electrical engineering majors. Both ended up getting MS in EE. Both worked for many years as engineers and then as engineering managers, which we both still do. Our career paths sound similar, but we’ve never worked at the same companies, and work in different technical areas.</p>

<p>Oldest started out Bio-Engineering, will graduate this year with CS degree and Theater degree, minors in Bio, Chem and Art.</p>

<p>Youngest will start in Math, but will change to philosophy, imho, probably with a minor in math.</p>

<p>me; 8th grade, read Dibs in Search of Self. That’s what I wanted but didn’t know what “it” was. Thirty years later; Child Psychiatry 20 plus years. ; that’s what “it” was. </p>

<p>D went in HS superstar, and came out English in 4 years , with a few diversions, a year after college doing Americorp. . Son, sophomore in high school “can he go to college”, sophomore in college, mech engineering and a "RAIN research scholar. ***?</p>

<p>Went from biological engineering to electrical engineering and computer science.</p>

<p>I entered college as a Computer Science major. I’ll be leaving with degrees in Spanish and Accounting.</p>

<p>Me: entered as Finance major, and graduated with degree in Finance</p>

<p>Wife: entered as Finance major, and graduated with degree in Finance</p>

<p>S1: entered as Finance major, and graduated with a double major (Finance/Accounting)</p>

<p>D: entered as a Nursing major, halfway through and still on track</p>

<p>S2: entered as a Computer Science major, halfway through and still on track</p>

<p>S3: entered as an Architecture major, switched to Industrial Design after freshman year…added another year, so has 3 years remaining.</p>

<p>I started at Math/education and ended as math/education.
Brother started as Chemistry and is now doing his PhD in chemistry.
So neither of us changed our minds!
It’s strange, but of my friends, I can’t think of any of them who switched (other than roommate’s husband who switched from engineering to politics and now works a great job in DC after getting his master’s). I always preach that you are going to change your mind but actually not very many of my friends did!</p>

<p>D entered as an architecture student and will graduate with a management/marketing degree.</p>

<p>Me: Started in English, graduated in Linguistics/Asian Studies- Indonesian), M.A. in TESOL, community college ESL professor.
Hubby: started in biology, graduated with B.A. in Art, works in television animation</p>

<p>DS: entered undeclared but interested in Environment Science. Graduating in May in Urban Planning/Studies with a Geography minor. Wants to continue with grad school but will be working at a Performing Arts venue as a program manager for the next year. </p>

<p>DD: enters in the fall in Criminal Justice/Forensic Biology. We shall see.</p>

<p>Started in Experimental Theater. Majored undergraduate with a degree in Nutrition Science and qualifications to become a registered dietician. Is now becoming a nurse practitioner.</p>

<p>S started freshman year in the Integrated Science Program. He stuck it out for a year, then switched his sophomore year. He’s now a double major in math and philosophy. He loves logic. Eventually he will have to enter the real world … He also became very interested in ethics and became a vegan last December.</p>

<p>My S1 entered with a declared major in business, marketing emphasis. He graduates next month with a BA in business, marketing emphasis, and a solid job offer (which he will accept) at a tech marketing firm.</p>

<p>Shrinkwrap, I read *Dibs in Search of Self *in 8th grade too! My Mom had gone back to school to get a degree in elementary education and I found all her child psych courses fascinating! (She’d started as an English major many, many years before.)</p>

<p>I started out as mathematical physics (i.e. theoretical physics) and ended up graduating as joint mathematics and physics.</p>

<p>Brother: started bio pre med, graduating bio pre med.</p>

<p>Me: intending on finance, possibly along with finance/econ/management</p>
