Freshman orientation/get to know you stuff

For those of us who just dropped kids off at ND, I would welcome comments and info, especially from Irish, as to what kind of effort is being made/what kind of events are being held in the Halls and overall to make the kids feel at home and to promote their getting to know each other and making new friends in a new place. Thks.

A biggie is next week we have a huge activity night that everyone really should go to regardless of your year. All of the clubs are there and it is a great way to find out what Notre Dame has to offer and get involved, and through that involvement meeting others.

As for the actual dorm, there aren't a whole lot of dorm events that are going on right now (unless you live in Dillon, but that is another story). However, most of us have our doors open and introduce ourselves to the new guys, so slowly but surely we are meeting the freshman. As time goes on there are dorm events and several dorm dances, so those are always helpful.

Long story short, I don't know that there is all that much going on right now, but it will happen as time goes on. With orientation I am sure that a lot of the freshman in my dorm know each other, and it will just grow from there as they are accepted into the dorm. For my dorm, we have small things like a table that we all sit at (if we choose, don't have to) and nightly Mass so there are a lot of ways to meet the rest of the guys. There are also dorm intramurals which start here really soon and that is a great way to get to know others.

I hope that kind of answers your question. Nothing really big going on, but don't worry, your children will find their place as long as they are trying to.

Irish, what's going on in Dillon? I know there is a pep rally to plan for--is that what you mean?

Well, I've found something to do pretty much every day so that I can meet new people. A lot of the clubs are having open houses and free food (yay!) and my dorm had floor meetings that helped us get to know each others faces a bit better. Just last night I went to The Show with a group of people and that was a great way to get to know them a bit better too. For the most part though, as Irish said, it is mostly that everyone is keeping their doors open and little events like dorm masses and stuff like that going on. Don't worry, it is so easy to meet new people, I've found that whether I am at an organized event or just doing laundry in the communal laundry room, I'm meeting tons of new people. The real challenge seems to be not finding people to hang out with, but finding my niche, but I'm sure that will come in time.

Yes, I mean the pep rally. They work really hard on that and it shows! Regatta is still better though :). Oh, YOU GOTTA REGATTA!!!!

I know what you mean shellzie. and yup im thinking it just takes time. (oh btw, i shrunk like half of my clothes in the keenan driers lol) yeah finding a niche takes time. oh yeah, ive heard that the revue owns all other events.

All the revue is good for is getting Saint Mary's ****ed at you guys and bashing on Stanford. Honestly, ask around. I know you hear it is great, but I am sorry to tell you that is all it is.

Now, a boat race where half the boats sink, that is something worth watching! Also, what every hall but O'Neill realizes is it isn't about who wins, it is about who goes down with the most style!

Now, on a sidenote, Shellzie have you gotten over to swim at all? Just curious.

Nice going, Red06. :) Was that your first time doing laundry? I've been doing my own laundry for years, but I hate the washing machines and dryers in our dorm! They just give you options like "whites" or "delicates" and I like to have control over the temperature/speed/time/etc.

And, no, I haven't gotten a chance to go over and swim yet. I really should go do that sometime soon!

Shellzie when is your swim test? S takes it tomorrow and my fingers are crossed.

Irish what is the Morrissey Manor's big event? The Christmas SYR dance? Any good? Hope so since they have those "cells", something should be good. Actually, S is loving the guys there, his roommate and is VERY HAPPY!!! Whew.

Red, son has the decadent laundry service for $190 a semester, and hoping that saves many a shrunken shirt, but then again, hoping he uses it, too :)

Aha! I have no swim test!!! Not that I'm gloating or anything....:) I got out of it with my lifeguard certification. And everyone hates me now, lol. Good luck to your son!

I am not sure what the signature event is, I am blanking on it, but I am sure they have something. That would be a good question for your son, he SHOULD know by now or else the seniors aren't doing their job!

I am sure your son will do fine on the swim test but I will keep my fingers crossed. I was exempt from all PE since I am a transfer, but like shellzie am a lifeguard as well. Yay for lifeguarding!

The website says that Morrisey's signature event is "Morrisey Unplugged" However, I have no idea what that is...
