Freshman orientation stuff

Project WILD or Project Waves?

I have no idea!

haha...I'm leaning more towards project BUILD...any opinions on this as well?

oh man thats tough... the beach is awesome but I'm def biased cuz I did PWILD - that was sssssssssooooooooooooo awesome!

what was it like?

Hey! I'm actually the roommate of the girl whose account this is but yeah... I got really excited when I saw this. PWILD is AMAAAZING. First of all, it's more than a program - it's a culture. We don't tend to be exclusive but we have one of the tightest communities on campus, even after the trip is over. The actual trip is fun and challenging, and through it I met many of my closest friends at Duke. There's a house course (eve. class run by students) in the spring that teaches you how to staff, and that has also draws us together as friends as well as cements some really cool aspects of the program. It's definately about the outdoors, but group dynamics and challenge and experiences are a huge part as well.
As far as PWAVES goes, it's tough to say because it's a brand new program. The staffers are pretty much all really cool (in fact almost entirely PWILDers), but there isn't a solid culture on campus. On one hand you could be part of developing that, but there's also no guarantee that it will turn out to be as amazing as PWILD already is.
Anyway, just do a program pre-orientation and you're guaranteed a strong friendship base once you get to campus and a way to meet a lot of great upperclassmen. Good luck!

does PWild require carrying a huge hiking/camping bag on your back the whole time? i want to do it but i might be too of a weakling. honestly :(

What are these programs? I remember seeing them at the BDD, but I didn't check them out. Explanation please?

yeah same ^^^^

I think you guys are the first class to be offered p waves

These things are like orientation things you can do with other incoming freshman at duke before the year starts... Project WILD is some outdoor trip... Project BUILD is a service project and so on... just a chance to get to know people before school starts and do something fun with em. Obviously other people could give you better specifics.

I've heard they are all awesome. PWILD is not extremely strenuous or anything.

I have friends who did PBuild and were crew leaders as well - they all love the program to death.

Likewise, friends who did PWild loved the experience.

How do you sign up for these programs?

i think i'm doing Project BUILD; who else??

One of my good friends did PBUILD this year, and he says it was one of the best experiences of his life. He actually will be a crew leader next year so from what I hear, if you're interested, definitely apply.

They'll send out a packet for pre-orientation activities/FOCUS along with your housing request form (from what I remember). Basically, wait until the info comes your way - that'll be when you need to apply.
