Freshman Orientation

So, just to clarify, it is not necessary to go to every single thing during orientation? What parts of the program should I go to? My mom’s going with me and my dad and sister will be hanging out in SB. Because of this, my mom doesn’t want to waste time at the program if we don’t need to.

technically you dont even have to show up if you know how to use the gold system. but if you dont just show up for the meetings with the adviser who’ll show you how to use it. but once you’re done, you dont need to stay with them to register for classes. i brought my laptop into the session when it was time for me to register and i finished signing up for all my classes. if you wait for the adviser to help you pick classes, you can only pick one class the first time around then you fill out your schedule the second time. everyone draws numbers and it goes up the number line then back down. those with bigger numbers get to fill their schedule faster but have a slightly smaller class pool to pick from since they have to wait longer to get to pick.

how do the room assignments work for overnight dorming? do they already have it assigned or can you choose your roommate for the night?

^

Its random room assignments.

this might be a dumb q
but for buying stuff at IV , do ppl use cash or credit cards ?

another question about transcripts

u should bring " Unofficial copies of transcripts from coursework" ?
wat if they already got all our transcripts/SAT/AP scores, then do we have to bring anything ?

ambyroy,

at orientation they show u a record of all ur ap scores. ur orientation advisor has a list of the scores to make sure that you choose the best and most appropriate courses.

you should bring any transcripts from any UC transferable classes, for example, a summer class you took at a communiy college

ok none then.
the only summer classes i am taking is watching arrested development and dead like me.
amazing shows

Err. I’m trying to register for orientation but no dates are listed and I’m unable to complete the form. Is it possible that I’m too late? There are still two dates left.

They might be full… it IS kind of late. :
Maybe you should call?

It says on the website all orientation dates are closed. Its to late to sign up. But I think they do have a make-up orientation for those that couldn’t make it to the other dates.

Wow. That’s really dumb of me. Work and family has been so hectic I couldn’t schedule it before =/ I’ll see what I can do. I was really looking forward to it… I hope I’m not missing too much?

WCF, I’m sure that make-up orientation will be the same. Don’t worry!

Im also missing the orientation.

I called the school and they said you just do it the first day of classes.

It is nice to know im not the only one though

WCF : there is a one day orientation on sept 22.
call ucsb to confirm

It says that they’ll email all of us that missed orientation in August. I hope we don’t get too big of a disadvantage when we register for classes and such!

Yeah mustaf, good to know we’re not the only ones. I have a friend who also missed the deadlinen. So that makes three of us

Haha i know like 2 ppl from FB who are doing it on sept 22
the only disadvantage i think is prolly gonna be that u wont get ur choice for classes.

I dont see it being that big of a deal. there are so many quarters a year you can make up for it, and the classes youre left with can still count toward your major/GE/etc

i am only speaking for engineering majors but this could be applied to other popular majors as well such as polisci, Bus-econ,bio and psych.

our engineering advisor told us that there are certain classes that are offered every quarter like : math 3c but there are other classes which are only offered once a year so if u miss that class and that class is a pre-req to your major, then u could be spending longer than 4 yrs @ SB ( unless u take that course else where )
