If you want to take Spanish within your first year at USC you should probably go ahead and take the placement exam. The language exam results are good for one year, while it's my understanding that the rest are good forever, except maybe physics which I was told not to take since I wouldn't be taking physics right away.

I was thinking about minoring in spanish too and it says on the usc catalog that required courses for a spanish minor are Spanish I, II, and III. It also says that you can satisfy this requirement in three ways:
1. Get a 5 on the AP
2. Get a 620 on the Spanish achievement exam
3. Get a score of "Met" on the placement exam
4. Pass Spanish III
So, the short answer is you should take the placement exam even if youre not sure about minoring. At the very least it will open up some options for you in the future.

Can the Spanish placement test be taken later on? I'm not sure that I want to minor in Spanish, but I am definitely interested. However, the soonest that I could start taking a class is second semester of my second year. Unfortunately this last year's Spanish class was a complete and utter joke. The teacher decided he was going to quit teaching, so he decided to use up his sick time by taking one day off every week. I really learned nothing. I plan on studying Spanish over the summer, but at this point I doubt my ability to get a score of "Met" even though I was at the top of this ridiculous class. So again, my question is can I take the placement exam at a later date?

yes you can....they give placement tests throughout the year

that link has the schedule for the tests for the year...i suggest that you just try at orientation...it wont hurt and may open up some options

oh god. i feel so out of it. i'm not going to orientation at all. and i want my effing facebook. haha.

anyways. thanks for all the info, it helped. :)

you can still get your email and your facebook even though you havnt been to orientation i think...some of my friends who havnt gone already got their email addresses....go to the usc website and scroll all the way down and you should see usc web mail on the bottom...click that then go to activate account and i think that will get you one

yeah, we activate our usc email addresses online. so you could just as well do it from home. however, they have to create your account - and i think this usually happens just a couple days before orientation.

for the USCard thing did you guys send in your pictures ahead of time? I just remembered and sent mine in today and my orientation is tomorrow!

I just had my picture taken at orientation. You stand in line and then you can pick up the ID later in the day. It's not a big deal, there's a little bit of free time.

You can also upload the picture online and send in the information by mail or just send your information and the picture by mail and theyll have it ready by your orientation.

what time did it end?

what other "pertinent" documents other than the admissions letter should people bring?

a photo id

and

your usc id # written down somewhere

They say to bring your orientation confirmation letter, but I never had to show that to anyone. I also never had to show anyone my acceptance letter. The photo ID and USC ID number are really important for pretty much everything. Also the program officially ends at 5:00, but you'll probably be finished with your registration before that.

They usually print USCards in less than 24 hours. If your orientation is tomorrow and you submitted your photo online today, you're fine. No sweat. Placement tests are also not anything to worry about. You can simply skip any ones you decide you don't need, or show up for any that you find out you do need. They make that easy :)

does the background HAVE to be blue?? I dont have one pic with a blue background and i dont have a digital camera. Can i just send in a pic with another color background for the USCard?

Yes, it has to be blue. If it's another solid color that's not the same as your hair or skin color, it's a simple matter to use a photo editor to change the background color to light blue. IMHO, it looks better in blue anyway.

And if image editing doesn't work out, you can always take your picture at orientation.

i have to catch a plane at 7 pm out of LA that second day, how late did the whole orientation last and is the traffic at that time really bad?

It's really simple to just go to orientation, take your picture while you have a break, and get your ID right then and there. You guys don't need to go to such extreme lengths.

For those of u who went to orientation already, how did they know what day you were sheduled for since u didnt have to show them ur orientation confirm. letter? The orientation site isnt allowing me to register for the upcoming orientation in two days, so i had to settle for july 14, but Im thinking of just attending this upcoming one anyways. What do u think?
