Hi y'all. I was recently invited to join the Freshman Research Initiative and was wondering if I should or not? I am not quite sure if I want to go to medical school or not, and i'm not SUPER interested in research.. Is this program a LOT of extra work? Did you enjoy FRI? Also, if I don't accept this offer, will there be other research opportunities for me later on?

I'm just undecided with what I want to be and am trying to decide if this program will benefit me. This may be a stupid question, but to get into med school or another graduate school such as Optometry school- Is research experience a necessity?

Definitely apply for FRI- it’s one of the best programs at UT. It may take up to 10 or more hours a week, but if you’re considering the possibility of doing research, this is the way to try it. Research experience is not necessary for any health professions school, but it’s something the more prestigious schools tend to look for.

Research opportunities outside of FRI are still plentiful, but attaining a lab position will require you to apply like you would for a job.

Does anyone know when the decisions are made for FRI? And, when my son submitted his application a week or so ago he looked at the demographics – is this a program that is merit-based or quota-based (in terms of gender, socioeconomic, etc.)?
