Freshman Tutoring/SI Job...What to expect?

In a few hours I'm taking a drive down to my college (entering freshman '08) to speak with the man in charge of the tutoring and SI programs. My advisor put a word in for me to be a math and science tutor as well as a SI leader. SI is supplemental instruction, where essentially I'd be attending introductory chemistry or math courses, taking the notes and listening to lecture, and then conducting several 50 minute supplementary instruction sessions a week for students who need help in the class.

I'm thinking that along with my research lab assistantship and 16 credits I might be biting off more than I can chew. Anyone with experience in tutoring or especially the SI program able to comment on what I should expect? I'm also wondering if tutoring and SI positions tend to require interviews. I'll be leaving in a few hours and I probably should've prepared better.

kkei08, I believe your assumption is correct. Research takes alot of time and effort, although you probably won't do anything too fancy your first semester/year.

Not to be rude, but I don't know if I'd want to be tutored by a freshman who hasn't taken the class yet.

At my school, tutors and SI instructors have to receive a B or higher in the course (they prefer w/ the same instructor as the section you're tutoring), so students are typically sophomore or above, with a few second-semester freshmen.

I agree with cards. I'd be scared to be taught by another frosh.

Judging from another thread where you posted your schedule I guess you could tutor introductory calc. But since you are saying that you are going to take general chem and bio, I don't see what sciences you want to tutor. I agree with the above posters that I would be uncomfortable to be tutored by a students who is just taking the class himself. You may be well above average at your college and may pick up the material faster than your fellow students, but tutors/SI leaders ideally should have more experience in the subject so that they stand above the material they are teaching. Right now, you don't know which concepts will be important down the road and which ones are 'fluff'.

I've already taken general biology and general chemistry at a CC in my senior year, as well as the AP bio and AP chem courses. I'm just retaking them freshman year for a GPA boost and to have all my courses taken at a university come med school app time.

How did your interview go?

Wow... I would be totally bored to take the same classes 3 times... Doesn't that bother you at all? I am not sure how med schools look at repeated classes. You know that you have to report your CC classes on your med school application, don't you? If you know the material well enough to teach it to others, why don't you just go ahead and take orgo?

(You can probably guess that I don't have a very high opinion of "GPA booster classes." If your other grades are less than stellar, one high grade in gen chem won't save your application. If your other grades are good, you won't need the "GPA booster" grade.)

I also wouldn’t trust a freshman to teach me jack unless it was a language and they were a native speaker.

Especially if they haven’t even taken a college level, non community college class.
