This is simply a general question-- are there any general admission trends for transfer students depending on the point of academic career that they're at, in colleges (from the very elite to in general)...?

Say for example there is a freshman student with mediocre grades and a sketchy profile, versus a sophomore student with good grades and a well-established profile of activities (obviously... 2 years versus 1) ... would the "seniority", so to say, put you at a disadvantage? Do colleges generally tend to admit less incoming juniors? Is there anywhere to find out this information?

Other way around, colleges give pref. to sophomore->Junior transfers because it shows them that they can handle collegiate work. Maintaining a 4.0 for 1 year is much easier than maintaining it for 2.

I've heard that students transferring with a junior standing has a disadvantage over sophomores. Can anyone verify this please?

Are there any successful juniors who have transferred out?

For instance, it is stated on the UVA website that they DISCOURAGE juniors to apply for transfer, unless they have a "good" reason.

What could a "good" reason be for a student to want to transfer so late in their undergraduate years.

that means that they discourage CURRENT juniors from applying...this is because they have a two-year stay requirement, which means if you're on your third year of college, if you transfer, you have another two years left, regardless of credits. Also, by the end of your junior year, you'll have around 90 credits usually, and they only accept 60. However, a current freshman and a current sophmore can apply, and in some places they have equal chances, but other schools give preference to one or the other. It really depends school to school, so the question "do schools prefer transfers as sophmores or juniors more?" really can't be answered except for school to school. i would assume most places automatically prefer incoming-junior transfers, just because they'll have more requirements completed, if not all. However, i'm applying for sophmore-transfer, and i'll have all except a writing composistion class completed and maybe 2 credits of calculus (even though by the end of this year, i'll have taken 10 credits worth of calculus)...so, again, it depends person to person, school to school

greatjun - are you applying to UVA? if so, what school? On Virginia's CC forum, theres a thread for transfers...
