How are classes so far? How large are the classes? Was it hard to get your first choice? Anyone start at the conservatory and how is it going?

I don’t know how many students will be checking in to answer you. If you want any parent answers, I’m sure many of us would probably be able to help.

How are classes so far?
-Pretty good. Challenging with lots of reading but interesting as well. I find my intro biology to be especially difficult. This might be, however, because my high school bio teacher was not stellar. I also came from an extremely poor public school with a lot of grade inflation. I guess it’s just going to have to take some playing “catch-up” and adjusting to.

How large are the classes?
-My first year seminar has around 16 people. Maybe 30-40 ish in my Chem and I think my Biology has 160? The last two classes are intro level and I imagine that is why they are large. I don’t think large classes are common at Oberlin. I believe that the average student-teacher ratio is either 9:1 or 10:1? If I remember correctly.

Was it hard to get your first choice?
-Not difficult at all. Both my roommate and I got into all of the classes that we wanted to take.

Anyone start at the conservatory and how is it going?
-Sorry. Can’t help you there. I’m not a connie.

My classes are also good. I love my freshman seminar and another one of my classes, but the other two are just all right, I supposed because I don’t find the subject matter quite that interesting. I’m also taking a bunch of excos, which are great.

Most classes are under 20, except for my science class, which is a lecture with closer to 50 people.

It wasn’t too bad for me because I registered for two classes this summer, and the other two had plenty of seats. However, I had had an early registration, and I know that a lot of my friends had trouble getting into what they wanted.

registration times are determined by the number of credits you have, so if you go into oberlin with a lot of AP credit, you will get a better reg time. and then in the spring the upperclassmen will be registering way earlier.

don’t sweat the reg time, the magic of add/drop will come at the beginning of the semester and people always change their minds. for some classes you can talk your way in, especially if it’s relevant to your major.
