What is usually preferred by freshmen, a laptop or desktop in one's room, or both?

Also what other electronic appliances are useful and allowed in rooms?

What is usually preferred by freshmen, a laptop or desktop in one's room, or both?

Also what other electronic appliances are useful and allowed in rooms?

laptop definitely.
you'll probably want a tv, an alarm clock, a fridge, microwave. i would also recommend a printer.

Where do people who dont have printers print their homework et al ?

as for the tv, if you have a triple, would it still be advisable to bring one? i mean there is that possiblity my other roommates will bring theirs too or maybe the noise will distract them?

Save some money, space, and hassle and don't get a printer. There are computer labs in many buildings and virtually all dorms. You don't even need to get on a lab computer to print something, just go to http://mprint.umich.edu/ and you can have your file print to the location of your choice for easy pick-up.

Always talk to your roommates about things like a TV or fridge to see what they're bringing and what you think works best for all of you. Fridges with or without microwaves can also be rented from housing if you don't want to bring your own.

Yeah, mprint rocks, you can pretty much print to any printer in the dorms or central campus(a few on north campus too) with it. It's much better than having a printer, which can get quite costly with ink.

so for the tv, is there a cable/satellite feed coming into every room or do we have to pay for that?

also what is the situation with internet, is there wired or wireless connectivity in every room?

(sorry if these questions are dumb)

Every room comes with cable service and outlets. If you don't want cable service, you have a few weeks to get it deactivated, otherwise it's part of your housing charges. Also, every room has wired internet. Even though your room may have two ethernet ports, only one of them will be activated, so if your room has more than one person, one of you will need to check out a hub from the front desk of your dorm.

West Quad has wireless too!

I brought a desktop and laptop. I figured I would be spending a lot of time on the computer doing work, so I would just like to have the whole deal (plus this thing is five years old now and it saved me the trouble of transferring all of my files.) So when I was in my room, I used my desktop. Class and the library, used my laptop.

Having a printer is also very nice. For mine I used to print off things I needed right away or things that were only a few pages. Big sample tests or 30-page packets, I went down to the computer lab.

Other than that, you'll want an alarm clock, tv, fridge, microwave. I'd recommend getting a flat-panel tv. Saves a ton of space (This also goes for desktop monitor...no way would I have brought my desktop if I had a CRT)

I liked listening to the radio too, so I brought a little radio. Was actually sweet for living in Markley, because when my friends and I went outside to play football, I would just put the radio in my window on the ledge and we could listen to music while we played. (93.1 Doug-FM and 94.7 WCSX are the best.)

I also had a PS2 and N64 in my room...didn't play PS2 all year but it is a dvd player so that's why. You guys might be about the age where N64 was kinda before your time, but if you are in to that, games like Goldeneye, Smash Bros., etc. are still a lot of fun.

Anways...I needed three power strips for all of my stuff. I just counted 14 things of mine that I had plugged in, not counting fridge and microwave my roommate and I shared. My electric bill next year is going to suck.

Laptop over desktop for sure.

I like having a printer in my room, even though I usually use the computer labs printers, sometimes I'm in a rush so it's great to have right there.
