Freshmen Residential Colleges

I'll be attending Case in the fall. I'm looking for a quiet residential college with more science / pre-med students. Preferably, it will be near where first-year classes are. Among Cedar, Mistletoe, Juniper, and Magnolia, which one is the best for my situation? Please include information about all four, if you can. Thanks!

All of these are situated in the same area. If you’re majoring in a STEM field (bio, engineering, etc.), unfortunately, you’ll be about a mile away from your classes. If you’re majoring in the liberal arts (psych, foreign languages, etc.), you’ll be quite a bit closer. Cedar houses and Clarke Tower from Magnolia are the farthest away from the other freshman housing, but only by a little bit. They’re all situated in pretty much the same area.

If you’re looking for science/pre-med students, it really doesn’t matter where you go. The school has a lot of them and you’ll find them in any of the dorms. If you want quiet, Juniper and Cedar might be a better pick.

Some quick information on all four groups:

Cedar: nicest, most recently furbished dorms, but as mentioned, a bit farther away from most of the other freshman dorms.
Mistletoe: most balanced? Close to most things, co-ed floors, but rooms are not the best of quality (though tolerable).
Juniper: seems to have the most cohesive group of people, but it might’ve just been my class
Magnolia: a lot like Mistletoe, but Clarke Tower is 12 stories instead of the usual 4, and also uses suites instead of rooms.

Quite honestly, it doesn’t really matter where you pick. The perks of each dorms wasn’t all that noticeable and the type people you live with is really pretty crapshoot. Just find a roommate that you think you can live with and then you’ll really be set in terms of living quarters.

Thank you, ChiGuy. Anyone else?

It looks like the residential colleges have been aligned a little different for the 2014-2015 school year. For example, Pierce this year is Mistletoe but next year, it will be Cedar. My S was in Pierce which worked fine - based on his comments, I’m not sure that the residential theme really had much focus on his daily living! ChiGuy’s comments are great, especially his last one!

I think it would be hard to predict what each college will be like in the future since it’s a whole new class every year, but what worked well for my son was to select a room on the top floor and go random on the roommate assignment. His impression was that the more social, outgoing students wanted to be on the lower floors - so whether that’s true or not, I know his situation worked out well for this past year.

Are you able to select your own room again? Do you know where to find the interactive facilities tour? <a href=“Facilities | University Housing | Case Western Reserve University”>http://students.case.edu/living/facilities/tour/

We heard that there can be a lot of ambulance sirens from Euclid Ave., so my son also picked a room facing the other direction. Not sure that was actually a problem for those facing Euclid, but we didn’t know about CC to ask about it. Maybe ChiGuy or others can comment.

It says they are adding another building for freshman housing next fall - Taplin House. Maybe you can call housing and ask if the building is newly renovated or anything. If so that might be a good choice.

ChiGuy’s comment that it all comes down to a crapshoot is probably the best way to look at it - but the good news is that most students at CWRU are going to be very focused and hard-working so you probably will be fine.

Which building or theme won’t matter much. There are so many science majors that you be with them no matter which building you select. If you can get on a fb group for your class (someone usually makes an unofficial one each year) then perhaps you can find a roommate. My daughter found a roommate for freshman year this way and now three years later they are still roommates!

I guess if Case is shuffling up the dorms and the labels, I should clarify which one was which regarding my first post.
Cedar: Smith, Taft, Tyler
Mistletoe: Hitchcock, Pierce, Storrs
Juniper: Norton, Raymond, Sherman
Magnolia: Clarke, Cutler

I don’t know much about Taplin, but since it used to be part of the Institute of Art school and it’s in the area of the ex-Cedar houses, I assume it’ll be similar quality to Smith, Taft, and Tyler.

As for ambulances, I didn’t have much of a problem with them really, but I don’t know if it’s because the noise didn’t bother me or if I inadvertently picked a room that wasn’t affected by the noise.

any specific information you guys can give me regarding Smith house? It’s my top choice.
