Hi all! I was wondering if anyone here could comment on the difficulty of the introductory theoretical math courses such as math 4330 (Lin. Algebra) and math 4130 (Analysis). Would these classes be open to me as an incoming freshmen? I'm familiar with proofs (math programs and self-studying) but haven't taken any courses in application based MV Calc. or Linear Algebra. I would like a challenge but I don't want to be out of my league either.

4000 level courses?.. I would say you are out of your league…

Take 223-224 first and see how you do.

Talk to your adviser about this. 400-level courses usually have prerequisites, though they aren’t really enforced. If you really really want to dive right into a 400-level course, pick one that interests you and talk to the professor during orientation. If you can show him/her that you’re capable of handing the material (that would mean mastery of prerequisite material, hard to demonstrate without having taken the necessary courses!), then maybe they’ll let you take it. Whether you can really do it will depend on how prepared and motivated you are. Do keep in mind that freshmen rarely take anything beyond 200-level, and that for the majority this is plenty. If you find in the first few weeks that you’re having difficulty keeping up, then you can drop it.

edit* I have never taken a math course outside of engineering, so take my comments with a grain of salt.
