Math 513?

Maybe a weird question but I figure I'll ask... I am adverse to stability, I always have to change things. I'm currently signed up for Math 425, and noticed I can take Math 513 instead at the same time. I've taken linear algebra at another institution, and looking at the material we did and the tests at UM, it is slightly under the level of Math 217, but significantly above the level of 214. I wouldn't otherwise be planning on taking another Linear class, but it will count for flexible elective credit for CS, the credits can be used as part of a minor if I decide to do that. Since 10 credits of that minor must be taken in house, so that would require I take 4 classes above 215-216-217, same as 425. I would probably take 425 some other time.

I'm going to take it as fairly obvious that 513 is harder than 425, probably a lot harder. But I do want to take a couple abstract math classes, so I guess I'm wondering if 513 is too hard of a class to jump into that with, even if I've taken a linear class before?

513 is extremely difficult. I recommend holding off on that class for as long as possible, if you truly do want to take it eventually. I definitely would recommend taking a proof-based course beforehand, at least (i.e. Math 451, which is very difficult in itself). Most people going for a minor rarely take such difficult courses as 451 and 513. 425 is exponentially easier than 513.

I’m not sure about 513 in the first semester, but the fall 512–> winter 513 sequence is kinda being groomed for 395 sophomores.
