my friend that goes to wharton at upenn made this site... www.whoopsamerica.com
which is an amazing site, but idk if i can do that.

he got into all of the colleges he applied to but chose to go to the ivy league, but he said that making the website really helped him in the admission process... i need to know if doing something like this would help me get into a school like mich or any good school???

any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If it is a very distinguished site and accomplishes something unique, then yes. But people don’t create stuff like that for the purpose of getting into a good college.
Also, creating something like that is more effort than getting good grades and high test scores anyway.
Unless you have a great idea and are passionate about it, I recommend focusing on the “normal” approach.

You’ll probably hate designing a web page that you’re making for the sole purpose of college apps. That sounds horrible, pursue what you’re passionate about. I can’t say that website helped a lot for your friend, but it does look polished and he seemed to put a lot of work into it. Certainly couldnt hurt. If you can stick to that and update, addon etc. then go for it. But that just sounds like a boring job if you just wanna impress admissions people

This is the first time I heard this, making a website to get to college. But if anything can make you stand out from the crowd, you better use it. So this friend of you is going to one of the top business school in the country, may be the admission committee sees the site as a marketing initiative. But not sure if one thing works in all situation.

trust me - starting a company even a web based one is really hard on itself. let alone getting into and going to college also.

I don’t think that website would help at all in the admissions process. He or she made it using Joomla (free content management system) and a free pre-made theme plugin. Anybody could make the same thing in a few minutes by clicking a few buttons.

The only original part of the site is the actual articles - meaning that it’s really just a fancy blog.

If your friend runs a web development business and does this kind of thing for clients, then it could help his application a lot, but as it currently stands, it’s nothing more than a fancy livejournal or MySpace. My guess is his or her grades and scores played a much bigger role in the admissions process.
