From a CC to UCF to UF

Hey guys. I have a question about a dilemma.

I’ve applied for the Computer Engineering (Hardware Oriented) program for the Fall 2015 semester at UCF, FSU, and UF. I’m currently attending a CC and wish to transfer to UF. I’ve been accepted at FSU and UCF, but have been rejected at UF because I did not have the six required critical tracking courses completed at the time of application.

I was missing one more critical tracking course. The reason I applied was because I was told by the advisor at the community college I’m attending that it was ok to apply earlier because I could just list the classes I was going to complete before I started the Fall term, and they would see that.

I received the UF decision today, one week before finishing this semester, in which I will be completing two additional critical tracking courses with a total of seven completed.

My situation at home right now is a little murky. Long story short I have to move from where I’m currently living by the time the Fall term begins. After this semester, I need only to take Cal 3 in the summer term to graduate with my AA and a total of 94 credit hours. Yes, 94 hours. @-)

I’m aware that UCF might offer better opportunities for internships because of it’s location, but I’m also aware that UF’s College of Engineering holds a higher ranking than UCF’s. Although they are both good Colleges, I’d prefer going to UF because any little advantage that higher ranking might hold will only be to my benefit.

So finally my questions: Is it a good idea to go to UCF for the Fall term, apply again to UF for the Spring term once this semester is over in a week, and if I get accepted to then switch to UF? Or should I find a way to stay put and wait for the Spring semester to begin before moving? Would my going to UCF before UF affect UF’s decision? And is UF worth the hassle of moving after four months? Also, are there absolutely no cases of transfer students who have been accepted without having at least six critical tracking courses completed? Or is this just UF’s nice way of saying that they will not accept me?

Please try to answer every question to the best of your knowledge. Any information given will be greatly appreciated! Thank you for the time.

GPA: 3.52

UF really does require that you’ve completed at least 6 critical tracking courses. Have you talked with an advisor at UF? You can also check out the transfer student thread in the UF forum to learn more about other students experiences (including being rejected for not having taken the 6 courses).

Either of your two options (going to UCF then UF or staying put) are fine. It’s slightly easier to transfer to UF from a CC than an university, but not enough that I would let that drive my choice. UF is very well recruited for Computer Engineering (Intel is a major recruiter), so it’s worth transferring to UF from the other colleges.

@Gator88NE Thank you for the quick response! I am emailing an advisor at UF now.

I have also looked at previous career fairs at both UCF and UF, and think that the batch of companies that attend the UF for recruitment are more to my liking than the ones at UCF, so I’m going to do everything possible to get into UF.

Another question: Does applying once to UF and getting rejected hurt my chances of being accepted if I apply again in the future, as I will be doing?

Nope, it doesn’t hurt if the issue is the # of critical tracking courses. That happens all of the time. Make sure that’s the issue and let them know you plan on applying again, once you’ve taken the classes.
