From community college sports to 4 year: Scholarship Possibilities?

My sister is an amazing athlete... D1 material. She hurt her leg before the start of her Senior year of high school and was out for the entire season. It broke her heart (obviously) because the chance of an injured player to be recruited to a school is slim. She's had a few official visits, but hasn't been able to settle anything with the coaches. It actually seems as though they are ignoring her calls/emails. Very odd. She was polite and friendly at the visits and the coaches had nothing but great things to say about her when they contacted our family about what happened during the visits.

Her hopes are slightly lower and she's looking at community colleges (California, where we live) as a back up plan. My question is, if she plays for a community college for 2 years, what is the likelihood that a 4 year will offer a scholarship (full ride/partial)? I mean, if she comes back and is playing like she used to or better, why wouldn't a scholarship be offered? Am I right? Is this typical of 4 year institutions to offer scholarships to community college players? I just don't want her to put all her eggs in one basket and then realize that they don't offer sports scholarships out of a community college. I've been trying to research this online and haven't had any luck. Thanks for any responses in advance. :)

Community college players do go to bigger schools. This is a question to ask the prospective CC coach. One of the big problems at the CC where I work is that the athletes often have trouble keeping their grades up. This may not be a problem for your sister.

They go to bigger schools, but are they often given scholarships to go there?

I know of one I noticed when my D and I were researching colleges. A goalkeeper from a community college was given a scholarship to a Division I school. I don’t know if this was because of the position–nice to get a proven keeper.

I think she could be recruited as a scholarship athlete out of a cc (I believe this is fairly common for baseball players), however her two years at cc will count against her NCAA total and she will only have two years left to play at a 4 year institution.

How about taking a gap year from school instead and playing her sport for the year until she is back to her previous level, then doing the recruiting process. What is your sister’s sport?

I know that it is true for basketball players.
