D was a long time, high level soccer player (see screen name) who decided to quit her junior year of high school. At the time she quite she had already been in contact with some soccer coaches but dropped all interaction once she quit.

She is currently attending a 4 year CSU state college and really is not liking it, and did not really want to play soccer there. She is considering transferring to a community college and is "thinking" about playing soccer again. She has contacted the CC coach and she will be meeting with him over the summer. Her interest in play is because she actually admitted missing it and the team camaraderie; the ability to get priority registration ( benefit to being on a sport team at a CC) and to get into a better 4 year school. She had good grades in HS but poor SAT (ADHD) and should have good grades at the end of this semester.

While we have experience with "freshman" recruiting, do 4 year colleges recruit students out of a CC? Obviously, they will look at how they did at the CC level but what other things would a coach be looking for? Also, generally would a transfer recruit be eligible or offered a scholarship?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Here’s some info on 2-4 transfer, [DI Academic Cabinet refines transfer concepts - NCAA.org](http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/public/NCAA/Resources/Latest+News/2011/February/DI+Academic+Cabinet+refines+transfer+concepts)

I would call NCAA. However, there’s a rule that states that you have 5 years of athletic eligibility once you enroll as a full-time student (even if you don’t play a sport). In other words, enrolling at college or university full-time starts the five-year eligibility clock, so she basically already has one year used up. That means that if she enrolls in CC for another year, she’ll only have three years left.

14.2.1 Five-Year Rule - A student-athlete shall complete his or her seasons of participation within five calendar years from the beginning of the semester or quarter in which the student-athlete first registered for a minimum full-time program of studies in a collegiate institution, with time spent in the armed services, on official church missions or with recognized foreign aid services of the U.S. government being excepted. For foreign students, service in the armed forces or on an official church mission of the student’s home country is considered equivalent to such service in the United States.

beenthere2-Thanks for the link, very helpful. After reading this I have another question, she was a spring admit and soccer is a fall sport–would that mean she would be eligible to play 3 seasons at CC (if she stays that long) and 2 years at a 4 year? Or am I missing something?

Thanks

Well, if she enrolled full-time in spring 2012, then the five-year clock clock for overall athletic eligibility started then. However, you’re normally only eligible for 4 years in one sport. What I don’t know for sure is whether playing for a CC counts just like playing for a 4-year college, i.e. do regular 2-4 transfers have 2 years at CC and then 2 years at the 4-year college? I think so, but I would call NCAA.

She is meeting the coach next week so I will have her ask. Thanks

Actually, I would call the NCAA to be sure or at least verify the coach’s information.
