So I see. Well, I’ll continue to hope for the best.

I am with you hellojan, I haven’t even applied yet (about to do it), but hope for a FA miracle lol Is there anybody here who applied/is applying to GS as a Community College transfer? How generous GS is with regards to counting your credits from outside the CU?

I’m coming from a CC. I haven’t a clue as to what exactly will transfer - I can only add that to the list of mysteries.

Are any of you on Storybook yet?

I came from 2 years in traditional 4-year (that was 10 years ago) and this current year I have been at CC - I received my transfer evaluation from Columbia this week and they granted me 59 transfer credits. which is pretty good considering max is 60

For CC - they took: Econ 2 (macro), Music History, and Sociology
They did NOT take: English 102 (b/c they took my 101 from 4-year), or Statistics (b/c it was a winter-intersession course, which they don’t accept)
Pending (from this current semester): Int’l Relations, Comparative Gov’t, Econ 1, and Western History (1340-onwards)

I’m assuming they will accept my current classes, though that will put me over the 60 max. However, I’m assuming I can choice which classes I want to transfer over because some of my older classes (computer science for example) have no bearing on my current major.

I’m on storybook - Ben Stanley (though haven’t checked it since I first signed up, there was really no one using it it seemed like) — update, I just checked, ther are 99 people on. cool.

Hey, I too transferred in from Santa Monica College and they accepted all my units that I have taken there. And yes I am on storybook. Havent checked back yet though, too busy trying to juggle spring session and moving from the West Coast to the East.

^ i’m in SMC this term also. except all online classes… so you’re definetly attending Columbia this fall? Did you receive a large award amount? Doing loans? or lucky enough to have substantial funding?

i just checked you out on Storybook - i see you are a Econ/Philos major - i was going to do econ/poli sci- but think i am going to switch to philos - i think…

We really should meet up, send me a PM. Yes, fell in love with philosophy since I was young and Kaufman’s classes made me really appreciate the subject. I am lucky enough to have family funds available for Columbia. Haven’t received any aid package which I thought they do not offer to internationals and did not apply, boy was I wrong. So handed that in late and waiting to see how much help I’m getting.

The extraordinary thing is that Yale’s EW program, up until a few years ago, offered no merit scholarships and no financial aid. If you wanted to attend, you paid full freight.

Their admissions rate was something like 40% then. Now, with FA, its 2-3%.

it’s all about elasticities and revenue streams. Non-traditional students who want to go back are more likely to accept harsher FA conditions then traditional students are because people like us have LESS opportunities to attend top programs. There is no way I could ever transfer to Harvard or Yale or Stanford or even Columbia going through the normal transfer process. So these schools setup programs to capture the fact that we are more likely to go to the BEST place possible so there is LESS need to offer us lots of money to do so.

atleast that’s my “I’ve taken Microeconomics recently” argument :)

hey everyone, i just noticed there are two students from Santa Monica College. im at SMC right now too, got accepted to GS but im deferring until Spring. how did you guys find out what units they are giving you credit for? i have almost 80 units, and i want to have most of them transferred(i know the limit is 60 tho)
anyway, congratulations everyone on your acceptance letters, especially if you are coming from SMC!;)

I just received a letter from them last week outlining the credits. I wasn’t expecting it.

Did they offer you 60 credits?

ben8jam, did the letter say which courses would satisfy the core requirement at all? i took some classes to satisfy igetc, i wonder if it would satisfy the core

no, it’s not really clear which classes correspond to which core requirements - i also have 3 or 4 more classes (not sure if they’ve seen my winter term classes yet) for them to review, so I might have more then 60 credits in which case I hope and can pick and choose which ones i can use (i have some worthless comp sci classes from years ago that probably won’t apply to my current major at all)

check this blog posting for a photo of the form

[Columbia accepted 59 of my transfer credits - Harvard or Bust](http://harvardorbust.com/2009/04/columbia-accepted-59-of-my-transfer-credits.html)

Hey, just wanted to chime in - I also got into GS from a Community College. Oddly, though, they didn’t give me as many credits as I was hoping for. My CC is routinely listed in the top 10 CCs. Perhaps my course listings weren’t as rigorous as they were hoping for? I’m getting an English Degree, though, hehe, so many humanities classes and selected topics in literature, etc. Oh well, if only I had realized I was going to try to get into Ivies back then.

Also, I got my scholarship in the mail two days ago. I’m pretty happy with that part, considering the average GS action.

I’m planning on grad school right after GS as well, and I’ve heard so many stories of people doing just that. Here’s hoping on that, but a degree from Columbia (because that is what it is in the end, folks) doesn’t look bad, that’s for sure.

You mean GS degree

Don’t feed the ■■■■■.

Oop, yeah, right. My bad, didn’t think they were still hovering about.
