Frosh yr is over--Rising College Sophmore Scholar-Athletes

Hi

So for the most part our freshmen are returning home after their first year as scholar-athletes.

How did the year go- balancing academic demands, team practices etc.?

What will he/she do differently sophmore year?

You may recall the older thread..

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/athletic-recruits/1209445-first-weeks-freshman-scholar-athletes.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/athletic-recruits/1209445-first-weeks-freshman-scholar-athletes.html</a></p>

So just bringing it full circle.

Our K1 had a very successful year in the sport and also success in the classroom. The pace and intensity were VERY high...expecting excellence every day, all the time. The reward: a national title for the team. K1 also came home with an MVP award and Most Improved Award. Grades varied and the second semester while more intesne was better as it seems our student figured out how to balance the team demands, the classroom demands etc. and what college profs really want from the students.

So how did your scholar-athletes year go?
Will they return to the team next year?

DS finished his freshman year at a small D3 LAC. He made the deans list the first semester, we’re still waiting to hear for this semester. I think he adjusted well to his baseball team given that he (not surprisingly) sat the bench except for jv games. I was worried how he would handle this since he started as a freshman in high school but all seems well. He’s motivated for competing for a starting spot next year and has plans for playing and working out this summer. Given that I wouldn’t have been surprised if he had quit because of other opportunities on campus besides baseball, I think he had a pretty good year.

Yes, I think the biggest hurdle is the balancing of academic demands and team demands. I hear sophmore slump can be rough.

D just completed freshman year at NAIA school, had a blast, did well in school, which was HUGE because she was not the most dedicated HS student so she finally “gets it”. Basketball was also good, loves her team, coaches etc. . Did not get the minutes she would have liked but the team is huge so I guess it is good she got minutes at all. She got the coaches award which was neat because it shows the coaches appreciate her intangibles.

hmmm slow thread.
So is everyone busy with summer?
Did your scholar-athletes stick with team?
Quit?
Was juggling academics and demands of collegiate sport doable?
More than expected? Less than expected?
