My son is a junior and has taken ap physics, ap biology, ap calculus bc, ap English, apush. He is finding FRQs very difficult. He has tried his best to write in classwork and homework FRQs but he won’t get more than 70s in them. Otherwise his grades in subjects are good. But his average goes down. Is there any way to learn how to write these kind of essays? Any book or online? How to grade your own hw or cw FRQs? Any kind of help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
When my D took APs in high school, she found the Barrons books very useful when preparing for the AP tests for each of the courses she took, including all the 11th-grade ones you mentioned except for Physics, which she did not take. You might go look at those books. The books have sections that help the students answer FRQs for the tests based on how College Board grades the essays.
Whether these books are helpful for your son’s class grades is unknown. He should go talk to his teachers for help with his class tests.
Also go to the teacher and say “I can’t seem to get more than 70’s on my FRQ’s…what can I do differently?”
Also find out how they are graded…is there a certain format that is successful? Is he only addressing 7 or 10 key ideas?
One time I couldn’t get more than a B, B- on English essays in one teacher’s class. So I sat down with her to figure out what I could do to change and worked with her on it and finally got an A-!
