Hi, my son has been accepted to FSU, UF and New College. He’s an NMF and was invited to the honors program at FSU, and will be majoring in econ. We visited all three last year and we liked the FSU campus and the general vibe the best of the three. (Also, it’s the farthest from Miami.) The thing is, he has absolutely no interest in football and the related hoopla. Is he going to be a fish out of water in this environment?
My son was accepted at FSU and honors also…he is planning on attending FSU and hopefully living in Landis Hall. (He has a good priority number for housing)I have lived 30 minutes from Tallahassee and campus for 45 years and can tell you the campus has great diversity. My son too has absolutely no interest in the sports and I truly believe he will have no problem finding his niche…good luck
@susub123 thanks for the info, maybe our kids should be roommates. We’re in Miami but I have family in NW FL and S AL so am very familiar with the area. We liked the campus when we visited last year.
No, he won’t be out of his element, but just like any campus with an athletic department that has the tens of millions of dollars in revenue that FSU’s has, sports are going to be promoted in lots of places (and they are, trust me). Some are also way better promoted on/around campus (football, basketball, baseball), so you’ll know when they’re going on but you won’t have any idea about a tennis match, swim meet, or track meet until you walk by the event happening.
I know tons of people that don’t attend games. A lot of people might like sports but you can’t attend all of the games (or really even that many). I’m not a huge sports person but I attend games here and there.
I do suggest that he attend a couple of the first few home football games during his first season. Even if you aren’t a fan of the sport, the atmosphere is positively electric. It’s something I recommend even students that absolutely don’t care about sports do at least once or twice.
Yes, maybe they should be roommates Has your son signed up for housing and orientation?
Most large state universities have a big football program. That’s what gets all the press, but there are many other things going on that doesn’t get reported on ESPN. FSU has around 40,000 students, so there are bound to be plenty of like-minded students.
@Susub123 yes, his orientation is 6/8-10.
