FSU Pre Dental

I'm thinking about attending FSU for undergrad before dental school... majoring in economics. How would you guys say this would prepare me for dental school admissions compared to UF? I'd probably be attending dental school at UF, but they say that they don't take preference for UF students into the program.

Please let me know if you know anything about this.

Thanks

i think its a great idea, as long as you do well in all of the pre-requisite course work that they ask for then you should be fine.

You would be fine - as long as you make the grades and take the courses required for entry into the graduate program.

Wouldn’t it be better to major in something more related to dentistry like biology?

Dental and medical colleges don’t want all their students being biology majors and them all smelling like dissected frogs and pigs; the professional schools like variety and students entering with different backgrounds and talents.

UF has a dental program you should look up.

[UF | College of Dentistry : DMD Program : Honors Combined BS/DMD Degree Program](http://www.dental.ufl.edu/Offices/Admissions/DMD/honors_combined_bs_dmd_program.php)

You can do your pre-medical/dental studies anywhere, just pick a university that your comfortable with. Tallahassee and Gainesville both provide ample opportunities to gain some good exposure to the dental field and volunteer work that will look great when applying for graduate school admission.

Leon County Health Clinic in Tallahassee is a great place that loves to take FSU pre-dents to get hands-on experience being a chairside dental assistant.

You can also volunteer at the UF College of Dentistry, rotating between various clinics such as oral surgery, ortho, endo ,prostho etc, and interact with the graduate students directly.

It is true UF students make up most of the accepted class each year at the CoD…but that’s because there are hordes of people from UF who apply for admission there, which may explain why there would be an observable preference. The only preference I have noticed is that they give everyone from UF a chance at an interview, then again they roughly give out 35-40% of applicants a chance to interview, so it’s really nothing special.

Dental and medical schools do appreciate diverse majors, but they still accept majority (I think it’s around 95%) science majors, but that may be due to bio/chem/physics majors etc taking higher level science courses outside the core pre-requisites which really drills the material in your head, so by the time you graduate or about to take your entrance exams you wing it because the material on those tests (MCAT/DAT) do not really stretch beyond the introductory courses such as chem 1,2 bio 1,2 orgo 1,2 etc…

Hope that helps. Good luck wherever you go. If you have anymore questions just ask.
