How come FSU Film School students move to California when Orlando is just down the road? Isn't the movie/entertainment business in Orlando very mature at this point?

Still more jobs in Los Angeles. Plus FSU alum in LA are announcing positions, as they move upward, to FSU students. Orlando is important and does help attract students to FSU.

Take a look at http://filmschool.fsu.edu/warrenreport/2006.html, the "Warren Reports," which describes where the school's alum are. See how many are in LA vs. Orlando.

I have been accapted to both FSU and UCF but I am unsure of which one to attend,I live in sth FL and that drive and the dorms really are putting me of.Is the prestige of FSU against UCF able to make up for the drive and dorms.

thanks looking for advice

I don’t think prestige should be an issue when choosing between two state schools. The schools have different vibs to them and you should go back and revisit them both before you decide where you feel most at home. I have many friends with kids at both schools and everyone is happy with their decisions. I believe that my daughter choose UCF for the drive and Orlando (she wasn’t fond of Tallahasee) but that was her thing, I loved FSU when we visited. The new freshman dorms were beautiful and the older dorms have been renovated. That shouldn’t be your deal breaker. My daughter loves UCF. She joined a sorority and is very challenged in her classes. She has made wonderful friends and spends most weekends at school (not coming home as some people suggest UCF students do). My friends kids at FSU seem to have more of the rah rah school spirit but they are doing much of the same stuff that my daughter is at UCF (sororities, parties, clubbing, studying hard/partying hard). Go back and see where you feel you belong.

Thanks for the reply

I have a similar decision to make. Trying to decided between FSU or UCF. Here’s the way I see it:

This thread is really old (2006?). Most of the info is completely outdated. A lot of stuff has changed since then. I think FSU’s SAT avg. is around 1265 and UCF’s around 1218. FSU is now ranked 102 (Top Tier) and a top 50 public university. UCF is still ranked in the lower 3rd tier though.

The dorms at FSU are actually very nice, and many are brand new. UCF has nice dorms too, especially if you like that typical Orlando “time-share” look.

Both schools have their fair share of great programs, but FSU is still head and shoulders above UCF in terms of overall academics. FSU is considered a national university, while UCF is considered a regional university aka commuter school aka directional school.

Both schools have a lot to offer, and it just comes down to which one fits you better.

I’m a high school student in a similar situation, although FSU is my #1 choice I’m prepared for UCF if for some reason I don’t get in or have a change of heart which is extremely unlikely, I visited FSU and UCF this year and both locations cater to different personality types from what I can tell, I personally loved FSU and UCF, well not so much. FSU had more of a college-town feel to it in my opinion, with all the local college bars, tallahasse lives, sleeps, and eats Seminole pride, and the old Spanish-Floridian architecture was more aesthetically pleasing to me than any modern school I could imagine, I wanna go to a university not a high tech institution which is what I got from UCF. UCF seemed extremely crowded, I personally hate orlando its too big of a city for college and doesn’t have a classic college feel to it like I experienced while visiting FSU, the >–Nole–> pride is outstanding, knight pride is embarrassing. I’d rather live in a smaller older dorm at FSU anyday and go to real house parties in a medium-sized city rather than lame clubs in the urban environment of Orlando. As far as UCF’s looks, they were nothing special it honestly just looked like another concrete set of buildings set off a jam packed interstate road with nothing but concrete in sight, the more I think about UCF the more I don’t ever wish to revisit much less go to college, I don’t care how many treadmills they have available in their gym. If your looking for a fun college experience with a lifetime of Seminole pride go to FSU, pre-med would probably look more impressive to as a FSU student than a UCF student to med schools simply because FSU is better academically. Tallahassee is the funnest city i’ve ever been too it was completely amazing, driving back to south Florida after my visit there was depressing, I can’t wait to get up their for the nice cool weather in Tally, but if you’re the kind of person who cares more about living in Orlando, doesn’t mind little to no school pride, and reputation go to UCF

Prestige of the program IS definitely a factor, depending on what program your S/D is looking at, if they plan to continue on to graduate school or a conservatory after undergrad, etc. I would ask the question - where/how many of your graduates do you place in prestious graduate programs, and which ones? Some schools seem to have more of a “pipeline” to specific programs. For music majors, I happen to like UCF a great deal and think it is a building, up & coming program, but it cannot be compared to FSU in the same sentence. One is a top 15 program, one isn’t even on anyone’s list as of today.
