FU School

I got my likely letter to the Fu School of Engineering today, but I'm interested in doing a dual degree in BME and economics from Columbia College. If I am accepted to Fu, can I get a B.A. from the college as well?

Thanks!

aznpastries you’re killing me, homework time was before you applied. but now that you are on the brink of admission, let me lay out some info for you, if you have questions, please feel free to ask.

the short answer is of course. but as you note it must be a dual degree program (as in you don’t get a BS in BME and Economics, but must complete a BS and a BA degree).

details about the program can be found here - [SEAS 4-1 Combined Plan: Application Deadline - April 30th | Student Affairs](<a href=“Columbia University Authentication”>Columbia University Authentication). it is a 5 year program. if you maintain a certain gpa (above a 3.0) you will have guaranteed admission into the program. it is possible to do the program in 4 years, i have heard of someone doing it, but it becomes kind of unnecessary and would require taking huge semesters and summer classes to complete all requirements.

you could have also done it the other way applying to the college first (it is a 3-2 program in this direction). i knew a few students who did the combined plan program, some did it because they wanted a year to pursue something intellectually that had nothing to do with their intended career path, others did it because they wanted another degree to complement the skill set they had developed in the other school.

i will say that unless you absolutely believe you need a background in economics to pursue whatever future you desire, you may find doing a BS in BME with a minor in economics to be sufficient (difference is a few classes and some access to senior electives in economics, but also means you do not need to satisfy all of columbia college’s requirements). if your interest is in becoming an entrepreneur, you might also want to consider SEAS (Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science is usually called SEAS in columbia parlance) minor in entrepreneurship that has classes specifically and programming for how to start a business as an undergraduate if not later on in life.
