Fulbright Summer Institute: What to Pack?

I’m going to be studying abroad in Wales for six weeks through the Fulbright UK Summer Institute (yay!) and I’m really unsure what to pack. They’ve told us to pack lightly, but that we’ll need formal attire, everyday clothes, and clothes for excursion trips like hiking, plus we’ll likely be going to the beach.

What is the formal dress code like in the UK? A couple of girls going to a different institute mentioned they’ll be bringing floor length dresses. Is that expected at formal events? People have also mentioned that I should try to leave room in my suitcase for souvenirs. If I already have so much to pack, should I just bring two suitcases to be on the safe side? Any general advice for packing would be greatly appreciated.

You’re a gal? Different program, but for 9 months abroad with Fulbright, D1 took one “little black dress” that was conservative enough to suit a more formal event but fun enough to wear out with friends. It was wrinkle resistant and actually inexpensive. I can hardly imagine needing something long. One pair of dark pants with a couple of nice tops can be a good 2nd choice, in addition, in case. Cute, light flats for any dressy events. But comfy shoes for walking. (You can get by with sneakers, seems like the while youth world wears them.) The rest is casual. Go for lightweight, it dries faster. You can always buy something there. Check weather (incl nights) and take a light jacket. Dont fill your suitcase, so there’s room for extras you’ll bring back. Have fun.

And I’d say aim for one medium suitcase, in case you have to lug your own. A small day pack for hikes or tours or an overnight trip.

I would refer to cosmetics too. Bring only basic expensive items you have, buy everything else locally, even shampoo. They are heavy and take a lot of space. Snickers, flip flops and 1-2 pairs of dress shoes. One umbrella - for sure!!! Laptop, additional batteries and travel plug adapter. Don’t anything that takes a lot of iron efforts. Take at least one thin summer bag for outings, the rest leave to your backpack. Avoid expensive jewelry - few month of showing off does not worth losing it or to be stolen. One more important thing - Make a several copies of you travel documents and place them in your luggage and other bags, in case your passport will be stolen.
