Fulfilling breadths at Community College for the summer.

i’m enrolled in the College of Letters and Science (freshman spring admit, this is my first semester). i fulfilled 2 breadth requirements at community college in the fall before i headed to berkeley.

i have a few questions:

am i allowed to take summer school at community college again to fulfill more breadths?

do i get grade credit? or just pass/no pass credit?

if i only get pass/no pass credit, i will have basically taken all my breadths for pass/no pass credit. is this good or bad? how many courses can we take for P/NP anyways? i’m applying for med schools - will they care?

i need to take a foreign language to fulfill the foreign language requirement. i also read that the foreign language course cannot be taken for pass/no pass credit, only letter grade. can i take it at community college?

thanks a lot!!

1) yes, as many as you want. the more the better, in my opinion.
2) just the credit
3) depends on the major - some have requirements that a certain amount of prereq's MUST be taken at berkeley, but others not so. it also might be good in that some (ie. psych) takes into account your grades at the community college in the prereq courses when you're applying to the major.
4) not sure about that one.

also, you might already know this, but check ALL CC courses prior to taking on Welcome to ASSIST to ensure smooth credit transfer. good luck / have fun.

for #3, i'm trying for MCB with the ultimate goal of applying to med school

what do you think double?

thanks a lot for replying btw.

yea how does this strategy look come medical schools?

The credits you get from taking breadth requirements at community colleges are not P/NP credits. They go into your overall UC semester credits.

I think you can take 1/4 of your total units in P/NP credits at Berkeley. I'm not sure of the fraction, but you can ask your adviser about this. I don't think med schools will care where you complete your breadth requirements.

a little confusing but yes to what tastybeef is saying: the credits you receive from a CC are not going to be counted as part of the units which you take as PNP, but rather only as semester credits - classes which you have already completed and thus receive credit for (it's the equivalent of taking and passing ap courses which translate into berkeley college credit)

as for med school, i'm not pre-med but my best bet would be that med schools will not care about where you take the prereq's. afterall, it's not like you're avoiding taking them at berkeley, you're just ahead of the game. i think, however, it might be a good idea to take core classes such as chem and bio at berkeley. also, make sure to get pre-med ppl's input on this, because i may be completely leading you astray. best of luck.

Can you take any of the Psych prereqs at a community college?
Also, can R&C requirements be fulfilled at community colleges?

another question to add onto this:
Will those foolish grades i received at local CC during high school be looked upon by med schools equally as heavily as the CC courses i will be taking there but as a college student?
-_________-

If you do well in CC classes (and there is no excuse for not doing well in them, other than mental challenges), med schools will not look down upon them. They will see your grades for them because you will be required to send your CC transcript to the med school application collection agency, and look positively on them. Why? Because an A at Chula Vista CC is better than a B at Berkeley. Period. A CC transfer with great CC grades, who keeps those up at Berkeley has an advantage over the HS admit with lesser grades, ceteris paribus.

(to Catalysis)

 • yes your psych prereq’s can be taken at a community college, I took most of those prereq’s in CC actually… A very helpful site is [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org), just click on the university, the CC, and the major, and it gives you the list of transferable courses you can take for credit & grade. Good luck!

Thanks!! :)

EDIT

“R&C, QR, and FL must be satisfied by the end of the spring term that precedes
your first semester at UC Berkeley.”

*** is this true?! So since I am going to be a freshman, I need to take both r&c this year?

^I think that might have to do with transfer students but I’m not sure. I don’t think you need to finish R&C your first year.

bumpbumpbump

yeah, that rule only applies to transfers (since transfers mostly use the site). I’m taking my R&C requirements in CC, and I’m no longer a freshman…and I’ve talked to an advisor about it before, so you’ll be fine. Except atleast in the CC I’m taking it at, its 3 classes, where in berkeley, you only need to take 2 to complete the series.

I have a question also, if I’m going to community college for the fall semester and entering school in the spring. Do the community college courses I take count towards my Berkeley GPA? Because I’m wondering if they will play any roll in my admission to Haas other than fulfilling breadth requirements. I’m kind of hinting is that if it’s okay to get a B or C in those classes, even though I probably wont, I just want to double check.

From what I’ve read, only classes taken on campus count toward your UCB GPA.

So do you think it would look bad to Haas admissions if I got a B or a C in a community college course? This will probably not happen but I need to know just in case.

It would somewhat, since you have to report it on the application.
