Hello!

I am an Asian international female looking forward to study engineering/sci math in college.

Due to family circumstances, I need 75%+ financial aid for college fees.

Are there schools with majors of my interest that give such generous amounts of financial aids for international students? And if so could you list some of them?

Thanks, :)

Look at the private colleges which meet full need like the ivies and other prestigious ones. Most have average fin aid awards of around 40K USD, so you will clearly be eligible for a lot of aid here. Although, do bear in mind that these are very competitive.

Do look at Cooper Union, it is a great college for engineering and is tuition free, so you only pay for room and board, and miscellaneous costs. Also check out SDSM&T, which has some of the highest average starting salaries in the US in engineering (approx 60K)

What are your stats? (GPA, SAT/ACT)

gpa unweighed: 3.85
sat: 2350 (750 CR 800W 800CR)
-many leadership positions in sci/math area
-many but not major awards in sci/math (just few state/district awards, aime, etc)
-some research experience in both math/sci

75% of USD 65,000 is very different from 75% of USD 30,000. What is the exact amount that your parents can pay?

If you scroll down through this forum, you will find a number of threads on guaranteed merit-based aid. If you take a look in the International Students Forum, you will find several more threads on aid for international students.

Good luck!

Very true

Also, the schools that give need based aid to int’ls don’t care what your family thinks it can pay. Schools will decide what they think your family should pay. they may decide that your family can pay half…or more.

There aren’t many schools with eng’g that promise to “meet determined need” for int’ls. And some are “need aware”.

For safeties, since it sounds like your parents can pay a good chunk, you should look for schools that will give you a full tuition scholarship.

I’m an international too (non US-citizen living in the states) and while its harder to get aid than American students, it’s definitely possible. I just got a 60K scholarship from Amherst, which is both need blind and promises to meet full need for all applicants. I would also suggest applying to Dartmouth and other Ivies as well, because while actually getting in can be hard, you’ll be set if you do. Another college that gives a lot of finaid for internationals (and has a large international student population) is Bryn Mawr College in PA (it’s an all girls school though). A lot of people say that colleges’ definition of “need” is generally a lot higher than your family’s, but while that’s true in some cases, it’s not impossible to get a great package if you have the stats. My grant from Amherst was actually a few thousand dollars more than what I thought it would be based on the online calculator.

Good luck!

Mom2…doesn’t UA give decent aid to international students with these stats who are going to major in engineering? Could you post the guaranteed award this student would receive there? That might fulfill the financial criteria.

Yes, Alabama gives full tuition scholarships to ALL students who meet the minimum criteria of an ACT 32 or Math + CR 1400 and a 3.5 GPA …and apply before Dec 1st and submit the scholarship app.

If you major in Eng’g, you get an add’l $2500 per year. So, free tuition PLUS $2500 per year. That could be an affordable safety for a student whose family can pay the rest.
