I would be choosing between duke and rice if I were you, not duke and yal

Sorry my phone sent that early
How much in loans would you be taking out for Yale?
Do you think Yale is a better fit than rice? Rice is still a great school. It’s not like you’d be getting substandard education. By any means.

I am, but I didn’t want to overload people with information haha. AHH idk.

Also have you stayed in the dorms and such at these schools?

I wouldn’t be taking out loans persay, my parents would pay off ct felp loans so that they could pay it more slowly.
I do not think Yale is a better fit than Rice… it seems to have more opportunities/prestige/name recognition, which I wish I didn’t feel like was important, but I do :(.

Duke has a medical school which should be offering the public health classes since medical schools offer MPH. If you go to rice, you may have to take some of those classes at UT Houston or Baylor.

BTW, 200k is a lot of money for most people it takes a lot of effort to save that kind of money for people making even 200k an year since this is after tax money and theoretically worth 300k in real earnings.

Yes, I’ve visited all of them, they all were nice, but there were a lot of people so it was pretty overwhelming/stressful at all of them haha. So a lot of my unhappiness during the admit weekends was mainly do to that (I think?) so it was hard to tell my reactions to the places themselves.

Yea I get that. Well personally I would advise you to choose Rice.
You have a full scholarship and you think its a better fit than Duke. And that Yale is an equal or worse fit, correct?
You would still be challenged, you would still have amazing resources available. Especially if you end up going to some sort of graduate school. I mean, Rice is still ranked in the top 20 out of the more than 3000 schools in the country. And seriously, fit is so much more important than prestige. This is kind of over-simplifying, but would you rather go to a school because people know the name or go to a (still GREAT) school that you love?

Go to Rice. Putting prestige aside, I don’t think there is another university in this country that is more similar to Yale than Rice in the overall environment and temperament of the student body (residential college system, uniformly nice student body, quirky and intellectual bent, etc. etc.).

I didn’t know that a full ride to Rice was in the cards for you but if it is, turn down Duke and go there with no hesitation and this is coming from a Duke senior so you know I’m not biased against my own school. It’s a fantastic place and you can pursue all your academic interests (math/stats/health policy) there with no problem. Duke is more like Princeton and Rice is more like Yale. Just something I’ve noticed over the years…

Idk if this would help at all, but trying weighing the colleges as college A, B, and C, not as Yale, Duke, and Rice and see if that changes the way you feel?

Duke is usually regarded as a top 10 school, so it’s not really a step down in quality.

With that said, there may be some advantages to Yale. Recruiting for consulting and finance will be stronger, even though both schools are great.

I particularly like DunninLA’s analysis. Look at it as Duke degree + 200k+ (interest, which will be earned if you have the 200k and will be added to your debts if you don’t have the money) vs. a Yale degree. I would take Duke in this situation, but I could see not doing that.

It isn’t a full ride, it’s about 11,000 a year, because it is tuition. I also have outside scholarships which I think will end up amounting to about 12,000 dollars. Just so you guys have a cost comparison, yale would be like 54,000- the 12,000 in outside scholarships, and Duke would be $0 and give me a refund of about 4,200 dollars. This is just for freshman year though.
My mom said if I go to Rice, I will regret it, because there are less opportunities than yale or duke, and less name recognition, and that if I really don’t like Duke, I should go to Yale.
But then, that’s not really the question, is it?
I’m also waiting to hear back from two 25,000 dollar a year scholarships, but I won’t find out about those until after may 1st. So argh.

If I take the names out, I’d probably go for college C? But that’s not how it is in real life, you know?

so what happens in year 2 at Duke and Rice ignoring any scholarships you have nt heard from yet.

Rice does have a great name, although not the rank. It has been really small for a long time (500 students per year until about 7-10 years ago) and so there are not a lot of graduates out there.

It was also voted most affordable school for a long time until 2000 or so when they started increasing the fee and admitting more undergraduates. They need to raise the fees to support more students. The tuition used to be around 15k or so until 2000.

Year 2, for duke I would have a scholarship for tuition, room and board, and mandatory fees, but no refund for personal expenses. The mention of it being for freshman year was mainly to point out that for the next three years I would be paying the full cost of attendance for yale.

So Duke is free for 4 years + 4200 in scholarship money back? How about Rice?

Sounds like Yale is at 54x4 - 12 = 204k.

Year 2 at Rice it would cost about 12,000 a year, and for the years after that.
I felt as though Rice had the rank but not the name lol (but maybe 17 isn’t very good… not sure?)
It has been really small, which is nice because I don’t like big crowds much :P

Rice is still small at under a 1000 compared to Duke at 1700 in enrollment per year. They used to have a graduate school twice as big as undergrad in 90s.

As far as I’m concerned Rice has both a good name and a great rank. How can you say its not a good rank when its ranked in the top 0.5% of schools in America? Really?
As for the name… Rice is a young school so the name isn’t as established as Harvard or Yale which, coupled with the smaller class size, is the main reason fewer people have heard of it. But as far as graduate school or professionally, Rice has a great name. E.g., it’s well-known to people who are very familiar with top colleges, less so to those who aren’t.
Is the concern about Rice not brig a good enough school all that’s holding you back from going there? Because, it seems like its a great fit

That, and I feel like Duke has more resources, and the scholarship program is such a good opportunity. The other people in the scholar program are so nice/supportive, and I wouldn’t want to lose that. Rice is smaller, and has less course selection, and considering I’m pretty undecided as far as major, that’s pretty important to me. But, idk :(
