If you start on the visiting team's sideline at tonight's AFC championship game, and trace the roots far enough - from the stadium in Foxborough, Mass., past his house in Nantucket, through old jobs in Cleveland and New York - you'll eventually end up at a handsome two-bedroom house in a quiet, secluded corner of Annapolis....

Although I'm not a New England Patriots fan I've always admired Bill Belichick. It's a shame that with his Navy roots he didn't have more sense or more of a sense of ethical behavior not to cheat.

Of no news to anyone, it's increasingly challenging for the SAs to compete in the world of BCS (or whatever they're calling the Big Buck Bowls these days). And Bill's faux pas is no doubt an extension of that pressure, that I'd bet he's sorry he bent to. It doesn't forgive his mistake; merely explains it.

More important to USNA, this event, and many others illustrate the rarified air surrounding guys like Paul Johnson. Perhaps one day he'll succumb to the seductions of a world that will do and pay just about anything for a winner, but it's sure nice while it lasts.

As for those of us who love Navy and what it represents, well, we should be thankful that guys like him come for dinner and decide to stay awhile. Our real victories are to be found essentially elsewhere. Still, hard to beat a great afternoon at the stadium, march-on and all.
