So I was researching scholarships that I could use for college, and came across the SUNY scholarships that will pay for your entire tuition to students in the top 10% of their class, to any SUNY, providing certain conditions. I am a NY resident, senior and applied to Yale, Duke, USC, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and Cornell (if my counselor sends the stuff in time to Cornell). I haven't applied to any SUNYs, but this seems like an incredibly good offer to pass on, if I'm going to be paying $60,000+ per year elsewhere (likely with father's income ). :( My question is, is this offer good enough to pass on an education at the other schools I mentioned, assuming I get into any, and if so, what SUNY would be the best? My major will be Biomedical Engineering, although I likely will switch to Cognitive Science. I'm 2 in class of 300+, so the scholarship. Stipulations are met, btw. Any help or simple advice would be appreciated.

HESC STEM Incentive

<a href=“NYS Higher Education Services Corporation - NYS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Program”>http://www.hesc.ny.gov/pay-for-college/financial-aid/types-of-financial-aid/nys-grants-scholarships-awards/nys-science-technology-engineering-and-mathematics-stem-incentive-program.html

As part of the STEM scholarship, you must major in one of the qualified majors and you will have to work in a stem field in NYS 5 years after graduation or the scholarship becomes an unsubsidized loan, which has to be repaid.

DId you apply to one of the land grant colleges at Cornell (as the scholarship covers tuition at the statutory college on a qualified major). I would recommend checking these schools; Human Ecology, Agriculture and life science and ILR.

If they have your major at one of the land grant colleges; I would consider asking Cornell to switch your application to one of these schools. IF admitted and you major in a stem field, you would get free tuition.

good luck

S

I looked at the link and it says "Recipients shall receive an annual award for full-time study equal to the annual tuition charged to NYS resident students attending an undergraduate program at the State University of New York, or actual tuition charged, whichever is less. " I understand it to mean that it only pays the SUNY tuition which is much less than Cornell.

Just went to a meeting with HESC 2 weeks ago, who made a point of saying that the HESC incentive it covers the land grant schools at Cornell (most likely a major at agriculture and life sciences, not so much at ILR), which are also part of SUNY.

If a student is accepted at the land grant colleges at cornell, attends and majors in one of the qualified majors, they will get the scholarship.

The land grant colleges at Cornell are also part of the SUNY system.

There is a lower tuition at these schools for NYS residents (tuition is $30,910.00 in state as compared to $47,050.00 OOS)
