full summer Spanish program abroad for 16 yr old

I'm looking for a full summer Spanish immersion program for my 16 yr old son. Cost is a consideration. He's had four years of honors Spanish, 7th-10th grade, just finished tenth grade honors Spanish IV. Languages come easily to him, and he has lived abroad before. Spanish is not his first foreign language. I have no problem sending him to live with a family for the summer; in fact, I prefer that over putting him into a dorm with other students who are also Spanish-learners. I found that the U of Salamanca has a program, and it seems there are others, too. Anyone with any advice? I'm willing to send him to Spain or Latin America, but I think that the Spanish that they teach in Spain would be more "standard" than in Latin America. Middlebury is too expensive for only a month long experience, plus he would not be living with native speakers. Can anyone recommend a full summer program?

Hi!

Go for it! Send him to Salamanca! I spent a year there - it was in every way fantastic! The city is relatively small and easy to navigate. There is also plenty going on. And it is one of the safest-feeling places I have ever been to - and I would venture to say that it is safe.

The format/methodology that the Universidad de Salamanca uses is effective, and your son will have a good time.

From what I saw when I was there, there are quite a few young people in his age group that do just that. So being a long won’t be a problem for him.

Here’s an article I came across for the University of Salamanca - [Study Abroad in Salamanca, Spain - University of Salamanca Spanish Courses - Blog](http://www.budgetstudyabroad.com/blog/study-abroad-in-salamanca-spain-university-of-salamanca-spanish-courses-8.html)

According to the article, a 1-month course can cost as little as 635 euros.

I know from experience that the university residences can be pretty expensive - even more sometimes than a homestay.

When I was in Salamanca there were tons of student apartments, and the going rate at the time was around 180 euros per month for a single room (you have a shared kitchen, living room, etc. in the apartment, and 99.99& of the time there is a washer in the apartment as well).

Funny, because I spent a lot of time up in Middlebury - had friends who went there. Middlebury has a great reputation for languages - but for actually learning the language and living in the culture, Middlebury (much as I adore it!) has nothing on Salamanca!

Salamanca was great. I will never forget it! Highly recommended!
