There are huge differences in a CSU over a private school. Size, graduation rates, cost… where to start?

The student will be eligible for the usual Federal Aid entitlements. Do not expect any further aid from a Calif public for an OOS student. All aid is for instate.

It is somewhat of a commuter school althrough there are dorms and plenty of students rent apartments and rooms in the surrounding area.

While Fullerton may have a dorm or two, Cal States are primarily commuter schools. Only a couple Cal States have sizable on campus living situations.

But the short answer is no, not worth OOS prices.

Are you talking about Fresno or Fullerton? Either way, there is no comparison between these and a private such as Chapman. Both of these CSU’s are commuter schools and would be expensive for OOS. The Cal State’s are not going to offer any financial help. I’m wondering why this OOS student would be interested in CSUF- Fullerton or Fresno?

Fullerton has about 38% of frosh in campus dorms, which is a reasonable proxy for resident students who start as frosh (frosh tend to be either commuters or campus dorm residents, with few being resident off-campus). Only 6% overall live in the campus dorms, indicating that most non-frosh live elsewhere, including the substantial intake of junior transfer students (unfortunately, commonly reported statistics do not distinguish between resident students living off-campus and those commuting from where they lived before attending college).

However, 62% of frosh not in campus dorms does indicate that Fullerton is predominantly a commuter school.

A few CSUs (San Luis Obispo, Sonoma, Monterey Bay) have very high resident student populations (>= 85% of frosh in campus dorms). But these are atypical among CSUs.
