I've tried to make this as ungooglable as possible (if that's a word.)

1.) What was the name of the last MIT president (before Hockfield)? What was the slogan on buttons student wore in protest to his "Freshman on Campus" policies?

Hint: it's a play on his name.

2.) "bituminous coal" --how is it related to MIT?

3.) What's the most obvious connection between the Yankees and MIT?

4.) What huge gas station sign is visible from MIT campus?

5.) Barbara Bush went to elementary school with which MIT professor?

Hint: It's a professor who taught one of the GIR's for years.

6.) What does the "Fishbowl" refer to? It was eliminated in the late 90's so current students might not know this.

7.) What is the name of the long hallway that runs through the main building?
(easy one)

8.) Who is the most famous MIT admissions blogger of all time?

9.) What is the name of the MIT mascot--explain the relevance of it to MIT's mission.

10.) An architect whose name sounds like a desert designed many of the buildings on campus. Name him.

I know the answer to 6, even though it was closed before my time. But I also read the entire web archives of the Tech during Christmas break/IAP of my sophomore year.

collegealum, did you know Matt McGann when you were in school? He's your year, if I recall correctly.

Seriously?! All of it? Even the stuff that's not online??

No, just the web archives. :) Hey, you have to have something to do over Christmas when you're still used to staying up until 4 AM and there's nothing else to do but argue with your MIT friends over AIM.

collegealum, I figured you probably knew who he was at the time. Jessie says he also used to wear a rather fetching fedora, so I imagine he was pretty identifiable as both UA president and fetching dresser.

Charles M. Vest..idk about the buttons

-----

who would ever wanna have a connection with that team?

the Citgo sign!

Eric Lander?...guessing you were referring to Bush's mom?

i have no idea

the infinite corridor

snively

the engineer is the official one..but the beaver is the informal one and it's because it's nature's engineer

im pei

wow, dillo89 really seems to know a lot about mit....i only knew about the citgo sign and the beaver being the mascot b/c of nature's engineer (and i only knew both because i just visited yesterday)

answer to #1: Undergrads wore buttons that said " 'Chuck' Vest ". Chuck was in single quotes, so they meant as the verb 'chuck' instead of as a nickname for Charles, meaning "throw him out".

Eric Lander?...guessing you were referring to Bush's mom?

Yes, W's mom and GHWB's wife. Eric Lander is way too young. Barbara Bush and this prof were in the same class in elementary school, and Barbara nominated this professor for class secretary.

The only one missing seems to be the Yankees one, and the obvious connection seems to be that MIT play at the Henry G. Steinbrenner Stadium, which was dedicated in 1978 by New York Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner and his two sisters. The gift was made in honor of their father, who won the national championship in the 220-yard hurdles as an MIT undergraduate.

nope... getting warmer...I'll probably have to just say it unless mikalye knows. He's pretty old now so he probably hasn't been teaching for at least 5 years.

Yes, I know it. He taught me.

I knew all of these questions immediately at the start apart from "bituminous coal", about which I had no idea.

The person nominated for class secretary by Barbara Bush, famously (on campus) did not run for President of the United States in 1992, despite a significant on campus effort to draft him into the race against Clinton, Bush and Perot. Quoting General William Tecumseh Sherman of Civil War fame: " `If nominated, I will not run. If elected, I will not serve.' "

A great pity, given the strong effort to push him forward. He is a very strong supporter of MIT Crew and of Stuart Schmill back when Stu was the coach of the Varsity Crew team. He also served on the governing board of the MIT Shakespeare Ensemble. I found this question to be "intuitively obvious".
