It was a difficult choice in the end…but now that the choice is behind us and DD can just focus on the group chats with the other new students, finding out about them, learning how diverse the school is, seeing all the cool kids she may become friends with, getting the list of the Freshman seminar topics - it seems like a perfect fit!
I hope everyone else has students falling in love with their chosen colleges this summer!
I would love to hear how kids connect when attending larger universities (DD class is only 550 students and she still waikes up to over 1000 notifications in the group chat!)
Congrats to her! DD is also very excited about her new school! Hers is about 10k students. There is an unofficial IG page where students could post profiles looking for friends or roommates. From there, they started following each other and some group chats developed. She’s made some friends and found a roommate.
I’m thrilled because she’s a homebody and not normally outgoing. She’s going far away and I think it might be really good for her.
From the highs and lows of those letters in January and February, to “this is my path and I’m excited to take it”… it’s been a heck of a year.
We’ve always been big on the idea of “blooming where you’re planted.” I’ll always cherish the day my daughter, upon having sent in her deposit, declared “OK, mom, I’m planted. I’m ready to bloom.”
She has a bunch of new friends on the group chat; a bunch of them have formed their own private chat as well. She has a roommate, and they’re both attending the same orientation session next month, so they can actually meet. I told her I would be happy to book the same motel (it’s a 5 hour drive for us, probably closer to 3 for her roommate) if she wanted; they could hit BB& B online and talk about room decor if they want.
She is absolutely ready to leave Long Island and start this wonderful adventure!!
That all sounds great! Fast forward, if you will, to a year form now when they’ve come home from first year. Choosing a good fit is really important. S definitely did that as he had such a great yr 12 hours away. So many new friends and experiences. We were looking forward to driving up to take him home. Got to tell you, it was a little sad to see these kids separate and go home. Large group and they are so tight. They actually did a clap out for each kid as they were leaving. Of course the girls were hugging and crying.
Some are already planning summer trips to visit each other. Great knowing he found a new home.
It really is so good to hear kids excitement after the choices are made. I’m sure she, and most others, will thrive wherever they go. Good luck to all incoming freshmen.
