I have a friend who believes he can get into HBS. Realistically, I do not believe that he has a shot, but he insists that he is more than capable of getting it. What should I tell him? What are his chances at HBS, or any top 10 B-school for that matter?

Stats-

College- UCONN (Currently at a branch campus but going to Storrs [the main campus] after spending this coming Fall Semester abroad in Italy)
Class-Rising Jr.
GPA-3.9
Major- Math, but planning on switching to accounting
Work Experience- 1.5 Years at Staples, 1 Year at Panera Bread, and 1 Year at a restaurant
ECs- None
Volunteering- None

he is the reason why HBS has so many applicants.

no EC/volunteering? worked at staples, panera? he’s 99.9% not getting into Harvard. Unless, he can get Barack Obama to write him a personalized recommendation.

Hypothetically speaking that Obama is too busy to write him a rec, what are his chances at a top 10 B-School? Insignificantly better? Is 10-30 feasible? Or is he just too out of touch with the real world with his childish delusions of grandeur?

Your friend has quite the GPA and work experience, but lack of extracurriculars or volunteering will drag him down.
Getting into Harvard Business School, realistically, is extremely unlikely with these stats.

Thanks for the input so far guys/gals. Is a top 10 or top 20 in reach? He’s says he is going to get an internship next summer and will then work after graduation. Any suggestions I could give him? I’ve tried explaining that getting by on life with the bare minimum will only give you the bare minimum, but he doesn’t seem to realize that and makes excuses for it (HS GPA for a semester was a 1.# [or so he says], never did any ECs/volunteering in HS, says he was just off MENSA level IQ on an IQ test, was depressed but doesn’t take his meds anymore because they don’t make him feel anything, etc.).

Will his self-predicted GMAT score of 730+ and “3.9” GPA with medicore to modest work experience get him into a top 10/20?

If he gets a 700+ with solid work experience and a 3.9 GPA. A Top 10 school is very likely. The key for him is solid work experience and not everyone who is successful academically is successful in the real world.
