Future chances for a Native American at Ivies??

I'm a Native American enrolled in a federally recognized tribe with a card and etc. I'm a sophomore in HS that wants to know if I'm on track for ivies? (harvard preferably)
- Low income, Washington state
GPA: 3.8
Intern for a parenting website (social networking, writing articles)
Volunteering at a hospital (started last summer (30 hours)
Key club (no position yet)
By the way, I heard that enrolled NA+decent ec's/grades= most likely acceptance to all ivies? Not that I would slack AT ALL or work any less hard if this were even a tad true, just wondering.

But anyways, am I on track? I know this is my second thread in the last few weeks but my GPA has changed a bit.

Forgot to say, leave your link and I will chance back :-)

Dartmouth has a sizeable Native American student population and is usually regarded as the school that does the most to help its NA students preserve their culture/stay in touch with other Native Americans. I wouldn’t be surprised, however, if that made it the hardest school to get into for Native Amercians.

Your test scores are a big piece of the puzzle.

At this stage, you have neither test scores nor a complete extracurricular profile, so. My only advice for you is: Keep working hard.

Look into the program on [College Horizons](http://www.collegehorizons.org)

It’s a program for Natives that could be quite helpful to you.
Stanford has a better program for Natives than does Harvard.
Harvard is is no way a done deal.

You’re definitely on the right track. Being Native American is a major hook, but you’re right to not let go to your head. Keep up the good work!

So is the whole NA+decent grades/ec’s/test scores= acceptance to all ivies not true then?

Responses?:(

Of course not. There is no automatic acceptance for anyone. You have to demonstrate that you’ll be able to do the work and you probably have to bring something to the table besides just being NA. But your grades are good and you’re getting involved at your school. Those things are very important. Keep up the good work. It also might help to broaden your search a little beyond the ivy schools. There may be some appealing schools that might even give you scholarships. Good luck.

Thanks! So basically I will need a strong application all around in order to be considered regardless of being NA?

Yes. You will definitely get looked at seriously and your chances are certainly much better than the average applicant. You are probably the most under represented minority, therefore very attractive. But they also want to make sure you’ll be successful if they accept you.

What do you think the lowest my gpa/sat score would be to be considered (considering being NA) by the end of high school to still have a strong chance of getting into harvard? Sorry for all the questions, I just find people on here much more knowledgable than myself :)

Oh, forgot to mention im taking ap/honors classes

I don’t think anyone knows the answer to that question because I doubt that there is one. Applications are looked at holistically at the top schools. Just do your best and don’t worry about it.

Thanks, great advice!

Bump 10 char

Bump…replies??

No one can tell you if you’re definitely going to get in or not. Don’t think just being NA will get you into Harvard, because it’s going to take more than that. It may be a hook, but there’s no formula to calculate how low of a gpa you need to still get into Harvard. It’s a reach for everyone.

Well on track! Do you have an SAT/ACT score to share? Work a bit harder and I can pretty much guarantee you’ll get into the Ivy of your choice. If you can get a 3.9 GPA and over a 2300 with a couple of ECs, you can consider yourself already in at harvard or other ivy.

Thanks! And I know that the whole NA thing will still give me no guarantee, I will work hard regardless. I have a 4.0 this semester and have 2 wks left of the semester so I’ll have a 3.9 cumulative when the semester is over. The 2300+ is really unrealistic though…I doubt that haha. But no, I haven’t taken ACT/SAt.

Yes it’s important you dot get too overconfident. I made that mistake and highly regret it this point.
