Future premed looking for advice

So I'm currently a senior and I've gotten into a couple schools, and I'm having a hard time making a decision. So I got into Boston College, Northeastern, UMich(OOS), UMiami, and Emory Oxford. I would be paying full price for BC, Mich, and Emory. Miami and NU are both 25k less a year with merit aid plus honors program. My parents are covering the cost of my undergrad regardless, but attending Northeastern or Miami would mean 100k less in med school debt. I love the weather in Miami, and I have family there. Boston is a great city overall and I'm a huge hockey fan. Michigan has its perks as well. Help me CC, what do I choose?

Oh and Rutgers, which I dislike, but is instate and free.

bump

All of those schools will prepare you for med school. Go to the least expensive.

I would be kind to my parents and go to Miami or Northeastern, especially if they will be helping to pay your med school costs. Medical schools care more about GPA, MCAT scores and lab or other exposure experience than they do the name on the college diploma.

The choice really is between NEU and UM and there’s no wrong choice. Each has its distinctive advantages and downsides but both are terrific choices.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking too, but I will admit I’m kind of prestige driven and Boston College and Mich are tough to just forget about.

My son is deciding between BC, Villanova and NEU for undergraduate/pre-med. Needs to decide by May 1st. Money from Villanova and NEU…but BC has that prestige factor. HELP!

I don’t think impressing your HS pals is worth $100K of your parents money, and that “prestige” is going to mean exactly zero in med school admissions. What will matter are your grades, scores, recs, etc.

Well, this all depends on your own interests. Personally, I would go to UMiami - great school, merit aid plus the honors program, and much better weather than Boston. Neither BC, Michigan, nor Emory are so much better than UMiami that it’s worth paying full price for them.

Nothing wrong with Rutgers, by the way - but if you really don’t like it, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with paying $25,000 a year for the chance to go somewhere like Miami.

BC isn’t that much more prestigious than Northeastern or UMiami. And honestly, the “prestige factor” doesn’t really matter that much in the long run. Certainly not enough to pay full price at BC when there is merit money at UMiami or Northeastern (or even Villanova).

My financial circumstances have changed and I decided to attend Emory. I went to high school in the northeast, and I’m now living in Miami and plan on living here after graduation. I think a change of scenery and something far away will be good for me. Thanks for all the advice.
