UA says their scholarships are awarded based on the GPA at the end of the Junior year in High School.

So what grade levels are used for the GPA calculation?
1-11 or 9-11 or 10-11

Is it recalculated after the child graduates HS?

Are you asking about NMF scholarships? or the regular scholarships?

For NMF, there isn’t a GPA calculation. If you make NMF, you get the scholarship no matter what your GPA.

For the other scholarships, grades 9 -11 are used. Bama uses the highest Weighted GPA on the transcript…that includes ALL classes, even PE and religion class.

Thanks m2ck, I contacted UA today and confirmed all the details on the applicable scholarships (NMF and Engineering). They are indeed still available and very generous. We are visiting the campus on Sunday and Monday and hope to finalize the details on attendance for the next 4 years (if they can set up a visit that quickly).

You are an asset to the University as this morning we were leaning towards Auburn or Oklahoma…

Glad to hear that you’re visiting. I think you’ll be impressed. Let me know if I can help in anyway.

Also…visit the Bama forum here on CC for more info.

Quick question: when you say the scholarship covers housing, that means just housing, correct? Not a meal plan?

Right. Meal plan is extra.

BUT…if you major in Eng’g or comp science, then you are given an additional 2500 per year…which pretty much covers the meal plan. :)

All in all, it’s very generous. Even if you have to pay for your meal plan (and frosh year is the pricey year because of the mandatory frosh meal plan.), the entire cost over 4 years is really low. You’re not obligated to even have a meal plan after frosh year. Or you can choose a cheaper plan then.

It is still not too late to get a great scholarship package for NMF and Engineering.

Finished registration, scholarship confirmations etc on Monday. Great staff and campus, can’t wait to get started next year.

Thanks to all those on here that have provided valuable information to help us with our decision. M2CK especially…

My son is a NMF scholar. My understanding is the only things not covered are the meal plan and books. Since we are expecting the National Merit/Achievement Special Scholarship of $500 per semester, he can apply that towards the meal plan.

Tuition, housing and iPad are all covered through the generous scholarship offer.

If anyone has a different understanding, please advise.

Not exactly. My son is also National Merit Finalist. He gets 8 semesters of tuition, 8 semesters of on-campus housing, $500/semester to use on fees, etc. Also, an Ipad, $2000 study abroad/unpaid internship(one time). It’s true you can use the $500/semester toward meals but there are also course fees, parking, and other fees. It’s a great scholarship but you will be out a little more than books and a meal plan. Fortunately, we are alumni and my son is receiving a couple of alumni scholarships as well. If your child is Engineering/STEM there is an additional scholarship for that(my son is not).

Most colleges charge “course fees” for some classes. These are like “lab fees” or “art fees” or “tech fees”. Naturally, those in majors that require a lot of labs (chemicals, fetal pigs, etc) will have more fees than others.

Yes, if you’re also an Eng’g major or CS major, you get 2500 more per year.

MechEng…Glad to hear that the Monday visit to Bama was a success and the student is enrolling. :)
