Fys

Some FYS courses like Anth054 meets the requirement for HS, NA, WB and US. Does that mean if I take this course, I can meet the above requirements by taking only one course instead of four different courses?

Current students: Any advice/suggestions for freshman choosing FYS?

As far as I know, yes.

Most of the seminars are good, so just choose whatever sounds most interesting.

according to the academic adviser i spoke with, you can fulfill multiple requirements with a single class.

Is it really that important to take a fys? I just don't have room in my schedule first sem with business pre-reqs, two language courses, and a life fitness class..its winds up being like 16 credit hours. a fys would make it 18...and thats alot... are fys alot of work/hard?

I didn't register for a First-Year Seminar. I've never been into seminars, and one didn't fit in my schedule. I can always take one second semester if I change my mind. I wouldn't worry about not taking one in the Fall. : )

GOB- nah, a lot of them are full anyway. and in my opinion, there are a lot of good ones 2nd semester, and if you didnt take a FYS first semester, you'll be on the priority list for the spring. i heard they're a lot of work but also definitely worth it.

So, is it hard to get A in FYS?

when can you find out which ones are available 2nd semester?

serendipity- if you go to http://www.unc.edu/fys/course_descriptions.html, it lists the subjects that offer FYS's for the entire year. then click on "current courses" to see which ones are offered during the fall. im assuming the seminars which are not included in the fall 2007 FYS pdf file are the ones being offered 2nd semester.

I want to take something related to Chem or Bio for my FYS. But Chem or Bio FYS meets the PL/PX requirements, which I already have.Chem101, 101L and Bio101, 101L are PL/PX requirements for my major (BS in Bio), and I got the credit for Bio101,101L through AP.I dont have any credit for Chem yet. If I get any Chem FYS, will that give me credit for chem101 or chem101L?

wait, im confused. you said that you dont have any credit for chem yet, but earlier you said you already got credit for PL/PX. arent PL/PX chem credits also? chem101 and chem 101L are classes for PX credit, which you already have due to your ap bio score.

well anyway...hmm okay lets see...if you got a 3 in AP Bio, that means you got credit for PX/CI, meaning you still need credit for PL. however, if you received a 5 in AP Bio, you're done with science requirements, since you'd receive credit for CI/PX/PL.

im assuming that you got a 3 in bio, since you say you're not done w/science requirements yet. so if you want to fulfill the PL credit by taking a FYS, thats perfectly fine. all the available chemistry FYS's fulfill the PL requirement, according to the course descriptions i found on the FYS website.

Sorry for confusing u. My post surely looks confusing, coz I'm also confused about this PL?PX thing, and now CI(whats CI?)
Ok, here's my situation. I have a 5 in AP Bio.I never took AP Chem.I printed out my major worksheet, where Bio101,101L and Chem101,101L are requirements for my PL/PX major(as written in that worksheet and those are the only subjects written).
Now I've my Bio credits. But no Chem credits, since I took no AP chem.
If I take a FYS Chem, will that give me the credit for both Chem101, Chem101L or only Chem101?
And in my major worksheet,chem101/101L has been specifically written fro my PL/PX requirement. So if I take something other than cham101/101L will that be a prob?

oooh i see what you're saying.

if your major worksheet lists chem101/chem101L specifically, then you must take those courses. i looked at the chemistry FYS's, and they do not fulfill those credits. so you'll have to take chem101/chem101L =(

where can i get those major worksheets btw?

You have to take Chem 101 and Chem 101L. A First-Year Seminar with a chemistry topic does not magically count for Chem 101 and the lab. Biology majors require a lot of chemistry. CI = Communication Intensive Connection. You can read all about it in the First-Year Guide. The website with the major worksheets is also listed in the Guide. Hope this helps! : )
