G-town Diversifying?

Sorry to have invaded your thread like this, I'll go back to the D board shortly lol

I was told by someone that they had a good chance at G-town b.c they were Catholic. This made me, a Russian Jewish girl, think that I probably didn't have as good a chance.

I mentioned this to a Jewish friend of mine, who dismissed this immediately. "I talked to G-town's representative at the college fair," she said. "I told her that I didn't have a shot at G-town, and that it wasn't diverse enough for me. She said, 'Oh, not at all! In fact, Georgetown is trying to diversify. They may even look at your application more closely BECAUSE you're Jewish. They know that people are turned off by the high percentage of Christian people, and are trying to rectify this.' So I decided I'd apply."

Thoughts?

I would agree with your friend. Every school wants diversity and being Russian and Jewish would help you out, not hurt you.

yeah i would think so too but just looking at my own high school, of the people admitted, I was the only asian female, all the others (about 5 or so) were white males

Yeah as far as admissions, Gtown seems quite conservative...
aka WASPY or Catholic... and a few token black and asian people.

Sorry to be brunt.

but one could argue that it's not G-town's fault, that the admissions pool is actually SELF-selective. meaning, non-Catholics and non-Protestants may be less inclined to go to a school where they'll be a vast minority, and won't even apply there.

that said, i've talked to G-town people who agree about the homogeneous atmosphere, and others who loudly protest that their best friends were a Polish Jewish guy and a Muslim girl.

I think the issue is that the majority of people who apply to Gtown are Catholic because Georgetown is a Catholic school, which would explain why a little over half of the students body is Catholic. I'm Catholic, but I have just as many or more Muslim friends here as Catholic friends, and I also have friends who are Hindu, Jewish, and Mormon, so I would argue there is diversity of faith and race.

I don't think they're super focused on Catholics. I put Agnostic on my app and got in. I'd imagine they're fairly accepting; they have both Hindu and Muslim Special Interest Housing, so there was be a fair representation of those groups, no?

I'm Jewish, and I got in also.

Hmmmm theoretically, is it a bad thing to leave the whole religion section blank? That's what I did with all my schools... lol.

I'm sure Georgetown has no problem getting bunches of hispanic applicants (like myself), seeing as we all (not all. but most) tend to be Catholic.

As someone said earlier, the application pool is self selecting b/c of the Catholic background of Gtown. When you're here, it seems as if it's diverse, even though it's not as diverse as other schools. I wouldn't say that there are a few "token" blacks and Asians(i'm black). There are pretty sizeable minority populations here. Simply put, if you want to hang out w/ people that are similar to you, you won't have a problem. If you want to hang out with a diverse group, you won't have a problem.
