GA State: Automatically Assigned "Out of State" Status upon acceptance, but I'm a Resident?

Hello everyone,

I applied to and was accepted to Georgia State University for a graduate program. I am not originally from Georgia, did not do high school or undergraduate program here, but I did move here about 3 years ago for a job and have lived here since then. I own a home here, car, pay taxes here, etc. When I applied they asked me some residency questions and I answered them all, mostly that I lived here, etc. Yet on my student account it says “Residency Stats: Out of State.” Obviously I can petition this, but why would they have assigned that in the first place? And is it difficult to petition for in state status? I feel like I am clearly and in state resident and can’t imagine why I would be classified as out of state, but this whole thing has me nervous as I can’t afford the program as an OOS student and don’t know what I could have possibly done wrong?

I don’t know about every school but when my d19 applies to a public here in NY, we had to include proof of residency. I think it was driver’s license numbers? Something like that. You may need to call the school (if it’s not obvious on their website) and talk to FA to find out what you need to do to prove in state residency.

In Florida there is a state form you have to complete (and sign) asking the questions about when you moved to the state, DL, mortgage or apt lease, etc. Everyone fills out the same form.

Maybe there is such a requirement in GA and until you prove you are instate, you are OOS? It’s not really petitioning, it is just completing a requirement.

I guess will just do the petition and assume maybe it was automatic assigned since I wasn’t originally from here? The petition is really a lot of work I’m just surprised this is the default to prove otherwise. For example according to the link posted above they want “certified” Georgia tax filings which I don’t even know what that means or how to get them…

Do the petition. I’m wondering if you’re automatically put as OOS since you didnt go to a GA HS.

I am a legal resident of Georgia, but when checking my application status online, it lists me as out-of-state. Why am I listed as out-of-state?
There are a number of possible reasons as to why a student might have been listed as out-of-state. Here are some examples of why the student might have been listed as out-of-state:

It was indicated on the application for admissions that the student is currently attending or has attended high school, college, or university outside the state of Georgia at any point and time.
It was indicated on the application for admissions that the student’s Driver’s License, vehicle registration or voter registration is from a state other than Georgia.
It was indicated on the application for admissions that the student had recently filed a state income tax return in a state other than Georgia.
The student was counted as a tax dependent in a state other than Georgia (If the parents and/or legal guardian of the student currently do not live in Georgia and file taxes in the state of their legal residence).

This is why- you did not attend HS OR college in Georgia, so you get listed as out-of-state.

Fill out the appropriate form-- not a big deal. If you are filing and paying taxes in Georgia, you have a state tax return, correct?

The petition is really a lot of work <<<<

Really?
