i was simply wondering if anyone had ANY information about gaining residential tuition if you're out of state? i've been looking at a bunch of scholarships and etc. and after having talked to a friend that finished up school at upenn, he said he was able to gain instate tuition after a set amount of time attending that school.

does anyone know if michigan offers this, helping to establish instate tuition after, say, a year of out of state tuition? thanks

Hmm, I’ve never heard of that. There are definitely scholarships that will help you though. Are you sure your friend didn’t have any instate ties or anything that would do this?

i’ve heard of this for a few schools. i was just wondering about michigan personally. but yeah im positive. he actually went to upenn for grad school after he finished up at irvine. he lived in california.

but as for scholarships themselves, will i automatically be considered for some after i submit a css and fafsa profile? i was looking for some that i can apply for, for out of state students. any idea?

he lived in california. finished at irvine and went to “penn” i just assumed he went to upenn didnt know it was private. he was probably talking about pennstate. honest mistake. and honest question. i just wanted to know if it was possible thats all. i’ve just heard of after a semester or a full two years being able to be considered for instate tuition.

he was my second cousin who came over for christmas dinner so it was the first time i’ve met him. my bad. i’d just like to not have to shell out three times the money thats all.

i looked up some of the info so i wouldnt get raged and people thought i was lying.

Q: Is it possible to be a legal resident of Pennsylvania and still be a non-resident for tuition purposes at Penn State?

A: Yes. Residency for tuition purposes is a policy of The Pennsylvania State University. While you may meet the requirements to become a registered voter or a licensed driver, you still may not qualify for residency for tuition purposes.

i just know it differs for every state and every college. which is why i asked about michigan specifically.

Eivita3 - Just to be clear, there is no circumstance whatsoever at Michigan where you could achieve instate tuition. It has the toughest residency requirements of any school. You will never be in state.
Which isn’t to say they can’t offer you sufficient merit scholarships that create the effect of having instate tuition…just that as an OOS there is nothing that could happen from your freshmen year forward to qualify you as in-state, even if you live there during the summers, get a summer job, etc.

ah k, well i suppose thats for clearing that up.

on the other hand do you have any ideas about scholarships i could be looking out for/apply for? my stats werent anywhere near stellar which is why i feel i probably havnt gotten many offers (mainly from instate schools that i’ve applied to).

me and my dad are currently working on css and getting ready to do fafsa as soon as possible. but any particular scholarships i might be on the lookout for that i dont necessary need to be the greatest student to be accounted for?

my parents already pay a lot of money for my sister to attend usc so anything, no matter how big or small would mean a great deal. thanks

Have you applied and been accepted yet? If so, you would be notified over the next month or so about any merit money for which you qualify. You may also receive grants based on your financial need, if same is identified. So you really won’t know if it’s affordable until mid April, in all.
If you haven’t applied and don’t have stellar stats, I’d suggest you apply a.s.a.p. to improve your chance of acceptance and scholarship.
Cheers,
K

yeah i’ve been accepted. i got my notice 2 weeks ago. i say this because im pretty vanilla, im just an average student that got accepted to michigan . i had kind of below average SAT and my gpa UW and W was about on the dot of average, and i had my share of leaderships in clubs and community service etc.

ive only been notified of some stuff from university of texas and a&m because im guessing im instate for them, but i havnt really heard from michigan at all. just the “congratulations” notice and now im writing my honors essay hoping to get in. Im basically just a little concerned taht i wont receive anything because they havnt been in contact with me or anything, which is why i ask if there are some stuff that i can apply for besides css and fafsa.

i was browsing through the whole list of scholarships/grants/ etc that michigan has and only some had applications taht i didnt qualify for, and others i assumed didnt have applications because accepted students are automatically considered which is why im a little worried because i actuall havnt been notified of anything at all.

thanks for your help again. i really wanna be able to go to michigan so im milking everything i can that will help my family out.
