I'm considering taking ISE 340 (Design of Computer Games) as a freshman, but I don't know whether I can. I'm also toying with the idea of taking Intro to Multimedia (another 300-level) as a freshman, but I most certainly will take both at some point. I see conflicting sources of prerequisites; one tells me I only need basic computer skills, the other tells me I need to be at least a sophomore, a third tells me I have to be a junior. I do know that I don't need any particular course. In addition, for both courses;

-Would any prerequisites be enforced?
-What's the course load like?
-I hear mixed things about Scarlatos, the professor. Is he a reasonable fellow? I wanna use my own computer throughout college as much as possible to keep things organized, so might he object to me using my own computer in class, or to using different software? I happen to know that he likes Macs very much, but I don't. (I primarily use Linux, but keep Windows around.)

Bragging about taking an upper-level course as a freshman ought to be fun. If it means anything, I wanna major in Computer Science, and am taking AP CS right now.

You “could,” theoretically, because it looks like there aren’t any specific prereqs, but I wonder if it isn’t the kind of course that fills up too quickly.

Then how early can I start registering for courses? I’ve been accepted already, and want to go, but haven’t submitted my deposit yet.

Oh, as a first-semester freshman? I’d say it’d be probably unlikely, unfortunately. Freshmen can’t register until Orientation, which is some time in July. By then, there aren’t too many upper-division courses left, so you take your shot when you get there.

Chris

Hm. What about in the Spring '13 semester? Might I have more luck then?

You might, if it’s offered, because you’ll be registering earlier. After I posted, I checked with the registrar; ISE 340 isn’t offered in Spring '12, but it was offered in Fall '11; it had 40 seats and was not full. So if it’s offered this fall, you might actually have a shot at getting in; depends on the department and next year’s upperclassmen, I’d think. Good luck!

Wow! Man, bragging about taking an upper-level course as a freshman is going to be fun. Thanks for the advice, Chris!
