I am currently a student here in the Gamecock Gateway program, and when I was hesitant about this program and how it really is, I found nothing but good reviews, but they were not the truth. I decided to put this out there because I don’t want others to go through what we are all going through right now, and I believe that incoming freshman have the right to an honest view on this mess of a program. This program is an absolute mess. The “leaders” and “advisors” have done nothing but lie to us about countless things from as little as printers in the dorm, to credit hours we need to transfer. It is run so poorly and quite frankly, all of us students are miserable and regret our decision to come here. Midlands Tech is a huge mess of a school. It is MUCH harder then University of South Carolina, and the teachers are lazy and terrible. We are forced to do much more work then regularly admitted USC freshman. I have a good friend from back home who is in the honors college at USC, and I am given more work then her honors classes. All in all is a terrible mess of a program and if you are a student who is hesitant about this program, go explore and thrive in a different institution that you will be happy. Learn from my mistakes, and good luck to you.
I’m an incoming freshmen and I just submitted by Gamecock Gateway deposit. I never had a big issue with large work loads, so I’m not very concerned in that aspect. Can you elaborate more on how you were lied to about the printers in the dorm and credit hours? In terms of credit hours, did you take the initiative to look up the classes you would need in order to transfer before singing up for them, or did you simply rely on the advisers? Can explain what the biggest issues you faced were (or are now facing)? Thank you for being informative!
*freshman (haha sorry, that bothered me!)
A mother asked at orientation mulitple times if were going going to have access to printers in the dorms, and the only reason I remembered this is because she asked so many times, and we were told by multiple gateway leaders that we would. When we move into bates (which is gross BTW) we didn’t have access to printers. It wouldn’t have been a big deal if they didn’t sound so certain that we would have printers in the dorms. Also, we did not have the opportunity to sign up for our own classes, our advisors put us in classes. There was ABSOLUTELY no choice in the classes we took, what time, and the professor. The only choice I had was for second semester and my advisor asked me if I wanted to take American or European history, because I needed a history class. ALL of my other classes I was put in with no say. For the credit hours, we were told we needed 30 credit hours, not credits, to transfer. Luckily, pending my grades this semester I’ll have the 30 credits, but I will be one of the few that do. I’ve also heard that USC and midlands are working to fix the mess of this program, so hopefully it will be better for next years gateway class.
@30960a just curious, how will most not have 30 hours? I assume they dropped classed? 30 hours would typically be 5 classes per semester which is a normal courseload.
many have dropped classes other didn’t pass some. Many current gateway students will have to take summer classes just to transfer. Some have picked up a seven week course, it depends. Also many nursing students have to take a summer course, which is A&P II, because the advisors put them in a class that they didn’t need to take first semester, so they are behind a regularly admitted USC nursing student. There are many people that have to take summer courses for many different reasons. The whole thing is a mess.
@30960a Do you know about how many actually met all of the requirements and crossed the bridge without having to go to summer school?
I am also very interested in how many met all the requirements. My daughter is taking a summer class so she can transfer. In our experience the whole thing is a big mess.
@Jerseyma It is a hot mess!
