@interapp Did Colorado College give you a full ride? If you have graduated from high school, it’s too late to retake SATs and ACTs.
@gearmom
I am interested mostly in LACs/women colleges but any other good option will be added to my list.
My parent’s income is very messed up, I can’t explain all details. Based on 2016 report, they could afford 0-1000. I don’t know how much it will be in 2017(it will be higher).
But we if not only income(support from grand’s, included that in CSS this year) up to 15ish next year because my brother will also go to college.
Yes, I am still in HS, should I retake them till summer? or can I try out August-fall?
Columbia College, MO, Honors Roll, but their CS is not certified by abet, so not really good option. I can try to transfer to LACs but usually it is very hard and almost impossible.
I can go to NYC school with option to live off campus(relatives live in NYC), can you suggest any college there?
@interapp Why do you need the CS program to be ABET? It’s not engineering and not all CS programs fall under engineering.
If you are still in high school take the tests again.
NYC is an expensive area. You can look at the SUNYs but I don’t think that they will be better or cheaper than the UAH option. Maybe. Worth a look and NYC is a fun place.
@interapp Work on coding during your gap year. Have completed projects to show or talk about.
Columbia College is a regional uni so maybe wait on that one.
Thank you for all of your replies! yes, I will build portfolio during summer-early fall.
But I don’t have any EC’s related to that, what can I possibly do?
@interapp I am confused about your question. Do you need to learn to code? It has nothing to do with ECs.
@gearmom
No, I know how to code, just need to build a good portfolio to show that.
I mean I don’t have any EC’s related to STEM.
@interapp People evolve. It doesn’t matter that you don’t have STEM ECs. Your ECs aren’t super important unless you rank at a state, national, international level.
@interapp Unless you are having your art and dance as a major, the universities won’t care about those. Coding WILL match up with your CS or engineering major. It will be more meaningful. And after reviewing your portfolio, THAT could be what is wrong with your apps. Not focused on the major that you are applying to.
@gearmom
Thank you, I will work on adding coding projects and finding other STEM activities, which I can do and enjoy.
@interapp @gearmom I had literally zero ECs/awards in computer science/engineering. I had chess, writing/newspaper, maths, language club, student government. It’s possible that sometimes they look for ECs that match the intended major, but as you can see from my case, not always.
That affidavit can include the amount of the automatic scholarship.
Math and chess “relate” to cs in that they show STEM ability and logic skills.
Yes, get a portfolio of projects but most importantly projects for an actual place - for an organization, a charity, or better (as
they’d pay you) a business.
You can apply to UAH next year.
Do retake the SAT before graduation.
@gigichuck You had math and chess and was named to the Yale Global Scholars. Also a higher SAT. There will be different EC expectations for students coming from Nigeria based on opportunity. OP is currently living in Oklahoma and attending a US school if I understood that correctly.
@interapp The coding project/s can be volunteer if you work for an org as @MYOS1634 suggested. You mentioned that you can’t be paid. No work visa?
@gearmom I am on J-1 visa and I am not living here with my parents.
I am in OK just for 10 months(I am named Future Leader by US State of Department(funny, but acceptance rate to that program across all countries is 2.3%, in my country 0.06%)and it’s fully funded , we can’t select to which state we are going or to which school(they randomly place you)+also they accepted me for another program(fully funded in DC); this program only for international 100 students to gain a better understanding of some of the key concepts and values that are an integral part of U.S. society and culture, and we wrote for admission a research-essay about social issues in our countries and how we personally solve them(mine was disabled people, I have worked a lot with POD in my country)+ recommendations.
I am in school which doesn’t have honestly anything(very small school, 22 seniors, lol), I was more busy back in my country than here. During this year I volunteered a lot in nearby towns, was a judge in Youth Justice Court in nearby big city, helped to organize and train in cheer camp for elementary students, did cheerleading and played softball, and was captain of Academic team(went till regionals). Nothing else is offered in my school and I can’t open any other club.
@gigichuck you had math awards which is very related to STEM.
I have 3rd place in English in my country and a few first places in drawing, so absolutely nothing related to STEM.
@MYOS1634 Thanks!
I will try to find some start-up in my country and work for them.
