My D will be doing a Gap Year. She is a rising senior and is filling out Common Application. Is it to her advantage or disadvantage to disclose that she plans to defer a year from acceptance? Do schools look at the Gap Year differently in their admissions decision? Thanks.

I’m applying to college during my gap year. No, they don’t view it differently, and a lot of colleges actually recommend them. When accepted, a lot of colleges suggest for students to take a gap year in their acceptance letter. I’m applying to LACs which have all been very supportive of my gap year. Research universities and tech schools may view them slightly less favourably since students would have went an entire year without math/science classes (I.e. a full year to forget the classes they took in high school). You can always email the admissions office at her favourite colleges and ask how they view it and if they have any suggestions about what to do during the year. Best of luck to her!
