What do you think of taking a year off between high school and college (opting for deferred matriculation/admission)? Are any of you considering it?

whats the point unless you are a mormon on a mission?

It's definitely an interesting thought but make sure you really know what you want to do before you tell colleges about it. Common ideas are language study abroad or community service...

I think it's a really good idea, but you have to have a plan for it. don't just hang around at home.

I've looked into deferred admission. What you do is you request a deferral after they accept you. I'm going to take a gap year and I've been careful not to talk about it on my applications--though during interviews it'll be a bit more difficult to keep my trap shut about my plans.

It's a good 8 or 9 months off, but I already have a pretty good idea of what I'm going to do during my "year off." I'm going to work on a farm and/or as an au pair in Norway for 6 months (or longer), then travel around Europe--or just the UK, depending on how the money situation is. (I have friends in Wales who might be willing to put me up if I go visit them.) Then I'll go to Ecuador, where my family will probably be living, to volunteer, study Quichua and brush up my Spanish before college.

Well, if you've got something interesting you'd like to do while you're still very young, or if you want to earn money for college... then, in my opinion, a gap year is the thing to do. It's pretty standard in Europe. :) (And I believe Mormons generally do their two-year missions after the freshman year of college, not after graduating from high school.)

Gap year is a good idea. and Anniushka's right. I wouldn't want to wait till I'm 50 and realize that there was something I wanted to do but never did.
And it would do me alot of good, I'll barely be 16 when I go to college so a year off would make me a little older lol.

^^Good point about the age. Colleges tend to be more supportive of a gap year for younger matriculants.
