Garcia Summer program

thanks! @kei04086‌

I’m almost positive we will be yes.

How prestigious and selective is this summer program? I got accepted but I don’t know how important that is! Are the expenses and the work worth it? How impressive will it be on a university application? Thanks!

@Pine97‌ I think its around the same as Simon’s

I am not so familiar with Simons…

Slightly less prestigious than RSI/SIMR, but around the same as Clark. I don’t know how to give you a comparison other than comparing it to other programs

Alpha101: accepted with 2330 SAT, 3 SATII 800s, 7 APs (6 were 5s), heavy course load and many ECs but nothing amazing, and horrible essays.

@Kei I don’t think this is as competitive as Clark, but from a college admissions perspective, I honestly doubt colleges (or anybody else) will care where you did your high school research.

@SciencenTrumpet‌ Admissions may not be as competitive as Clark, but it definitely isn’t an inferior program. In fact I think Garcia pulls more Intel Semifinalists than Clark. And you’re right, it matters more what you do at a program rather than where you did it.

While Garcia is an excellent program (Congrats btw!) I wouldn’t say that it is slightly less prestigious than RSI/SIMR or around the same as Clarks. Those programs are in a whole other league, based on selectivity, based on the frequency of science fair winners, based on how the alum head to wonderful places like college.

The reason that Garcia pulls more Intel/Siemens SMF’s is because Garcia takes around 60 people (from a pool of around 250 - 300) while Clarks takes 12 from a pool of 400+, some of which are rising seniors and some of which are graduating seniors, and not all 12 scholars pursue research in STEM. Both of these stipulations lend themselves to Garcia garnering more semifinalists. It’s an illogical comparison to make.

@Kaepernick‌ As I said, it matters a lot more what you do than where you do it. Going to RSI and not doing anything will not get you into MIT, while publishing a paper at Garcia might.

Who’s going?! :-)

Well I’m going. Shall I make a facebook group to help everyone get to know each other before the program starts? Though strangely, it doesn’t seem like there is as much talk about garcia this year as there was last year…

Yea, go for it & let me know how to access it :)

The group has been made, search for “Garcia Research Program 2014” and you should find it.

So far it’s just Pine97 and I in the facebook group, and we’re pretty lonely! :frowning: If you are coming to Garcia and have a facebook account, please join! If you have trouble finding the group, the url is here, without spaces: www . facebook . com/groups/324242831058612/

Loved it! At first it was a little overwhelming but after the first week you get really close to the other kids and really into your project  Housing & food sucks though but you get used to it lol.
