@overachiever01 Yes, who is applying from your school

To geiger42, from the recent posts from other applicants, in the past two years applicants have started to receive notifications March 8, which would fall on this coming up Thursday. But, they will continue pretty much through all of March.

Do they notifiy the people who are finalists first?

@geiger42 I am not sure who is, but I definitely will. I just know one senior who applied this year, don’t know about anyone else.

Where could I find the essay prompts?

Nobody has posted any sort of comment for that question so I don’t want to give you any information that may be false. My guess, however, would be that they send them out in the order that applications were received but that’s just a guess. FYI, if that happened i would be one of the last receiving notification because i didn’t submit my application until January.

@overachiever01 Go to GMSP.org and you can download the Prompts. Do you want to see an example from mine.

@mexinms Thanks for your honesty. How is your profile looking

Haha! no prob:)
sorry and excuse my ignorance;(, my profile for what?

I meant do u have any honors awards or any thing that makes your application stand out

@geiger42 Thanks and yes I would!

Oh, okay I get you!
Academic wise, I attended a month long medical scholars program at Mississippi State University this past summer. We got college for a Biology class and Pre-Cal class. It was suppose to simulate a first year medical students first month of medical school, and I would like to add THAT IT SURE DID. Twenty people from the state got accepted and I can proudly say that we ALL survived the Rural Medical Scholars Program of 2011! It’s main purpose was to promote “nurturing future rural family medicine physicians for Mississippi”.
Academic wise that’s probably what would stand out the most. I have received other school distinctions like highest end of the year average for certain classes, Who’s Who, etc. Pretty common awards that I think other applicants would have, so I would not think they stand out a whole lot.

Leadership and Community Service wise, I have done a lot of volunteer work for visiting hospice patients and tutoring at an after school Tutor organization sponsored by my town’s school. Student council, HOSA (health occupation students of America), Attala county library teen council. You know, school clubs. I was president of my school’s HOSA organization. To be honest, for leadership that’s pretty much all i have. I’m hoping that my community service resume makes up for my leadership resume.

It’s in no way my intention to ramble or brag though:) Like mentioned by other people before before, I believe that everyone who applied for this is highly qualified and deserves to get the scholarship so in no way do i believe that my application is better or worse than anyone else who applied. I would everybody to win, but unfortunately i guessed that’s not possible and like everyone else I really want to win, too:)

'bout you?

Good luck to everyone who applied and let everyone know whether you are a finalist or not! This is a very exciting time, and whether or not you got it does not take away from the type of student that you are! I cannot wait to find out what they said for me, but in a way I’m nervous too. They are probably so many other people that are more qualified and have better credentials than I do, but I’m staying positive and hopeful! Good luck to all! By the way, I am from Omaha, Nebraska.

I wish I could like posts like on Facebook:) I would have liked so may posts by now!

@mexinms I have over a 1000 community service hours. I have one national award on community service and a national honor on community service.
I have been awarded the youth service medal of honor award from my county on community service.

Lets now get to leadership potential. I am the the Communications Chairperson of the Dolton Youth Commission, and Dolton Chapter S.A.V.E. These organizations are community organizations. I help create these organizations. I am the Recorder of my school’s National Honor Society and I am the jury foreman of the Youth court that is present in my Congressional district.

Lastly Academic Achievement: This category is my weakest. I have been the Student of the Month at my school. I received a French Honors Award for hard work in French, I received an award from my Counselor during my Sophomore Year. I created tutoring programs in the City of Dolton and I received an English Award. In my essays I talked about how I was struggling at first and how I solve the problem and how I transition my studyin skills to other subjects. I also talk about my biggest achievments through the most depressing obstacles

I am from Texas with a class of about 500 students. As far as I know about 16 students applied from my school. I am anxiously waiting the day we receive notice !

I’m from Miami, FL. About 6 people, from my school of 529 students, applied.
I do find that my test scores are weak, but again, quality vs. quantity is key. You can write 1,000 words but not even address the prompt. I poured every last bit of my energy into those essays. Also, the nominator and recommender portion, I would think is also key because this is what gives the Gates organization a view of how your teacher, principal, counselor etc. viewed your abilities and allows them to know more about you. Instead of doing an interview, the Gates organization does essays. It is more tedious, thus making it more competitive but the more information you give about yourself, the better. They are painting a picture of you as they read the essays.
I agree with everybody else. We are all wonderful and capable people that deserve all the best. I know for some people, including me, this is a make it or break it deal scholarship. I have hope that I will get it, but then I don’t. We’ll all find out eventually :)

this is a bit preemptive but what other info do they ask for if you make it to finalist stage?

Leadership: President of Math Team, Board of Directors of Model United Nations, Youth Leader and Intern Pastor of Worship/Ministry at church, and Coordinator of Videos for a video-tutoring club I helped to begin.

GPA: Weighted: 5.34, Unweighted: 3.67 (ranked 4th in class, top 1%)
SAT: Math - 790, Reading - 640, Writing - 720
Subject Tests: Math I - 800, Math II - 800, Chemistry - 690

About 600 community service hours

National Merit Scholarship Quarterfinalist and National Hispanic Recognition Program Finalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, and a bunch of awards from math team and Model UN, Lee County Commissioner’s Academic Team

We’ve had about 5 scholars over the past 4 years. 1 two years ago, 2 three years ago, and 1 the two years before that. Around 6 people (class of 375) applied for it.

I feel like my unweighted GPA will hurt me though :/

@ Kwel1994. I know a few people who meet the minimum requirement and received the scholarship. The Gates Millennium is not an academic scholarship but a Community and Leadership Scholarship.

2 more days right???
