Well I got my rejection email from the terry scholarship today. On the bright side there’s still hope for the gates! Best of luck to all of you!

Aw man sorry @star2012 . I’m so nervous I’m from Chicago, I feel like I won’t hear til like thursday

@msvirgo thanks sis.

Guys I just want to say, if you reive rejection letters, please know that everything will still work out for the best. Make positive out of a negative situation. We all made it to this round because someone saw potential in us. I know I have the mind. I just wish I had applied myself more. GMS has made me realize that and I shouldnt settle for less than what I deserve in the future.

Does anyone know where the Hispanic letters are sent from?

Are there any other Native Americans on here?

Could you still be a finalist if you did qualify for the Pell Grant? Also is there any way to check through some other source other than waiting for mail? The anticipation is killing me!

Be patient. If you have a high GPA 3.6 and above with few Cs, u will be in a better position than I was …(got rejected btw)

Hey Guys!!! I’ve been keeping up with the facebook group started by a current Gates scholar and where GMS officials post news. All the letters, regardless whether you are hispanic, asian, african american, and native american, all come from the headquarters in Virginia:)

Also, the group creater, who happens to be like the daddy to the group, tells us to wait patiently, and we should all do that;) it will be healthier for us.

Also, apparantely people who have received them live close to Virginia. I’m from Mississippi so i hope i can get my letter before the end of this week! Good luck to everyone!!!

Also, Mr. G stated that a Facebook group will be created only for this year’s finalists! So if you are a finalist and you are somehow related to the facebook group, you will receive an invitation;)

All this information comes from the Gates facebook group, the one that is in secret.

Can you send the link to the Facebook page? Because there are so many groups that I do not know who to follow. I friend requested one, but am waiting to hear back.

Just to clarify: The Facebook group was once set as “closed” (members were able to request to join, and the administrator would allow them in), but it is now set to “secret”. This is because we are so late in the process that members shouldn’t bother joining simply because there aren’t really new questions for us to ask. There’s nothing more each of us could do at this point–we’ve submitted everything we needed to, and all there is to do is wait. All joining the group would do is create panic, make more people anxious, and cause people to ask more unnecessary questions.

It is true that Mr. G posted this on Friday: “The selection process is just complete for the 2012 class of Gates Millennium Scholars. All finalists will hear from GMS in the coming week.” BUT he did not specify that all notifications were sent out on Friday. The selection process was complete on Friday, but that doesn’t mean that all letters were physically brought into the USPS system. I believe this was done early Monday, if not on Friday.

At about 2AM PST/5AM EST on Tuesday, Mr. G posted a second notification: “Letters mailed on Monday will start arriving tomorrow. I wish each of you the very best and echo what you’ve seen here. Even if not selected, you’ve already achieved something great by getting into college. Good luck everyone.” I believe he meant people will start receiving them Wednesday, although a couple of people received them today because they are closer.

Finally, your notification will come through the mail. Nothing will come electronically. For those of us who live across the country, mail takes about three to five days to be processed and sent from Virginia to California. So I do believe everyone will certainly hear within the week.

Good luck to everyone who is a finalist! Please don’t be anxious; whether it’s intentional or not, some comments made may make other finalists anxious–and it’s unnecessary.

-A fellow GMS finalist

YEP that’s it!

Mexinms, can you ask the magical Mr. G if we will receive an email after we receive the letter?

^You could wait until you get something in the mail to answer that question for yourself…

Sara, somebody posted that a GMS representative told her that that we would. But, WAY after everyone’s notified. So, no. You will not receive an immediate email like we did when we were selected finalists:)

@Star2012

I am so sorry for that.

One question. My Freshmen year I received C’s and one D. But my Senior year, I even it out with 3 B’s and 3 A’s. I have a 3.32 G.P.A

How are my chances?

You meet the GPA requirement, that’s all we can help you with. No one can say certainly how much trends on your transcript will be looked into. Remember that they also look at your extensive essays, your leadership and service, as well as evaluations by your Recommender and Nominator.

It is nearly impossible to “chance” anyone.

@Star2012

Were the C’s in your Senior year?

blueviking, i just lost my house and mail takes a week and a half to be forwarded, but thanks for the smartass remark =)

Not trying to be a smartass, just being honest. If you have questions, contact them yourself. Posting on an online forum, especially CC, isn’t going to get you much of a reliable response.
